Those who are at high risk of breast cancer are those who carry one of the rare inherited BRCA genes known to be responsible for hreeditary breast cancer. Only 5 - 10% of all beas cancer cases are hereditary. If a parent carries one of the BRCA genes, each of their children has a 50% chance of inheriting that gene. For a female child, inheriting the gene means a 50 - 80% chance of developing breast cancer over a lifetime of 80+ years. The biggest risk factor for breast cancer is age; 80% of those diagnosed are over 50. One in eight women will develop breast cancer over a lifetime of 80+ years (in the UK this figure is quoted as one in nine). Of those, 5 - 10% will have been at increased risk of breast cancer due to carrying one of the BRCA genes.
