How much does your risk of breast cancer increase after you turn 30? I'm just curious... if a woman is that age, what are the odds of developing breast cancer at age 30, or within the next few years?

The likelihood of developing all types of cancer increase as we age. While the risk of breast cancer is low at age 30, it is not zero. By age 40, the risk of developing breast cancer in any given year is close to 1%. Regular self-examinations and annual mammograms are your best defense against this illness. Early detection generally leads to very favorable long term outcomes, while late detection poses significant challenges. During a person's entire lifetime, men have a 1 in 2 chance of developing some form of cancer and women have a 1 in 3 chance. Cancer is particularly common in senior citizens.

At 30 it is about 1 in every 11,000 women. Women under 20 the risk is 1.3 in every 1 million. Clearly there is a significant increase in this amount of time. However, 1 in every 11,000 is not a high risk. This is why screening is recommended starting at age 40, as this is considered very young for breast cancer. The women most at risk are postmenopausal. Of course that occurs at a different age for every woman. At 55 it is 1 in every 33 women. At 75 it is 1 in every 11. At 80 it is 1 in every 8 and this is when it levels off.
