Is there a connection between birth control pills and breast cancer

Is there a connection between birth control pills and breast cancer?
One gynecologist said there wasn't and prescribed them to me, but recently another one said I shouldn't take them because of the breast cancer risk. My mother had breast cancer and ovarian cancer. Can you refer me to any studies that have been done about whether birth control pills increase your chances of getting breast cancer?

There isn't any proven connection, however many doctors do get concerned when a woman is on the pill and has a strong family history of breast cancer. The medical community currently is not sure if there is any connection between the pill and breast cancer. Also, women who start there periods at age 11 or earlier have a higher chance of getting breast cancer, but this also is still being studied. Regardless of whether you stay on the pill or not, you'll want to be extra vigilant at doing self breast exams, having a well-woman exam EVERY year, and getting mammograms when you're at the right age. If you're looking specifically for studies on this, I suggest going to PubMed and entering in key words such as: breast cancer and birth control use.

Where this debate stems from is this: The more you are exposed to estrogen, the more risk you have for breast cancer. Some things that reduce estrogen production are: having kids (produces no periods) breastfeeding healthy weight after menopause starting your period later in life Most birth control pills contain a synthetic form of estrogen, unless you are taking a progesterone only pill. If you read the information packet that comes with your birth control, there will usually be a study about the link between birth control and breast cancer mentioned. Some studies have shown a slight increase in incidence, while others have shown no significant effect. For a list of the risk factors for breast cancer, what it looks like and how to calculate your own risk, look at the links below. Best of luck
