Why such a strong push to cure breast cancer

Why such a strong push to cure breast cancer?
Why is it more important than any other cancer of the body, like lung cancer, colon cancer, brain cancer, pancreatic cancer, etc., or any other diseases like MS, Alzheimer's, Cerebral Palsy, etc? It's like everywhere I go I see pink ribbons and "cure breast cancer" marketing. It's push to cure it is so incredibly disproportionate as to make me think there is some political motive behind it. Could it have something to do with the fact that abortion can cause breast cancer? That would certainly provide a political motive.

Because every year thousands die from it...

Because its more common

Abortion does not cause breast cancer!!! That rumor that abortion causes breast cancer is political for sure. 1 in 8 women get breast cancer. Poorer women do not get mammograms. We are trying to get the word out and have gotten insurance to cover mammo's since we have publicized the need.
4 :
Because it is important! Let me ask you this: Why not a strong push to cure breast cancer? I mean there are a lot of other cancers and diseases out there, but there is research going on about those too! You probably just haven't heard it as much!
5 :
its not more important. its equally the same as every other life threatning disease. it's just no one has stepped up to make other diseases a big thing. no one has had any really big campaigns for anything else. maybe you should start one.
6 :
because breast cancer kills a lot of people every year compare to other cancer problems.
7 :
That is a good question but think of who s starting all of these movements. People who have breast cancer or who know someone who has it are confident to start a movement all of the others aren't trying to help themselves as much as breast caner. Those other diseases are important but they are not doing as much for themselves.
8 :
I wouldn't say there is a push for it. Its just more out there. I mean would you Wanna wear a brown ribbon That said "cure ass cancer?" My grandfather just died of lung cancer, and I know that there is a push for everything. It just depends on what you are looking at.
9 :
aborting doesn't cause breast cancer. also, it's one of the cancers that kill the most and is hardest to detect. also, it doesn't just affect the female, but males are also in danger.
10 :
I think there is too much hype about it also...sometimes I think it is a scam playing on the fears of women. Twice I have been told.."we found "something", we are not sure and we need to do a biopsy to see what it is"..Twice I had the surgery to be scared out of my wits, and find out it was nothing but a big bill to pay. Also I was sitting in the docs and could hear him thru the walls, telling the two rooms on either side of me, the same exact thing, in the same scary worried voice, he used on me. I am now determined that the next time, I want to wait until they are SURE of what it is.
11 :
Breast cancer is the most common form of cancer in both incidence and death among women: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Breast_cancer There is no link between abortion and breast cancer: http://www.fwhc.org/abortion/abcancer.htm
12 :
Seriously mate, abortion doesn't cause breast cancer any more than having a baby would! That's just ridiculous. As for the rest of what you said here, I tend to agree with it. It is a 'marketable cancer' as breast epitomise femininity, and it is more socially acceptable to support that rather than something more obscure but just as deadly. I guess it comes down to your personal situation. Alot of people support breast cancer awareness because they have had, or know someone who has, had it. Famous people (like Kylie Minogue) who've had it tend to cause the media hype it up because she's a role model for alot of people. I'd love to have a cure for Autism, because my son has it. My friend would love a cure for Parkinsons as she has it. It just depends on your personal situation I guess. I have one friend who supports it only because the ribbon is pink, which is her favourite colour. I told her she's an idiot.
13 :
What is your source/proof that abortion causes breast cancer? What is wrong with anyone trying to eradicate any disease? There are groups that raise money for all the other diseases you list there. Lung cancer is largely caused by smoking, something which the individual could've prevented in the first place. Women in the U.S. have a 1 in 8 lifetime chance of developing invasive breast cancer and a 1 in 33 chance of breast cancer causing their death. According to the American Cancer Society, approximately 40,000 women die from breast cancer annually.
14 :
Perhaps a cure to breasts cancer will lead to a cure of prostrate cancer. If more men lived to 80 (right now the ratio age 80 is 2 females to 1 male), more men would be dieing of prostrate cancer the women of breast cancer.
15 :
If you've ever gone on a breast cancer walk, you'll see that there are a boatload of women who somehow blame - get this - blame MEN for their breast cancer. They also claim that "a man must have invented the mammogram machine" because it's so painful. Yeah - that's right some guy with a flat-boob fetish came along and saw this vulnerable group of women and shouted "AHA - I have an idea!"
16 :
First, breasts are a females friends. I call mine, "my girls". Its just like testicles are the friends of males. Actually, the bad boy for men is the prostate. I believe it's finally about time that there is a focus on diagnosing, and treating of malignancy to ovarian cancer, breast cancer, and cervical cancer, which are the major abnormalities in females. Because so many males are attracted to the breasts of females, to loose one of their girls has a huge impact on their self esteem. So fella, just acknowledge that urologists have been addressing prostate and testicular cancer for decades. While it is just a recent phenomena that breast cancer has finally been acknowledged for the total impact if its occasion, I am happy to see it. Now the focus for guys is ED.
17 :
Denise said its not more important. its equally the same as every other life threatning disease. Really? Spending in 1997 on research looked something like this: Breast Cancer $12,800/death, prostate cancer $2,700/death.) Since then, it the gap has grown wider. The National Cancer Institute also reported that during the period 1950-1991, women's rate of death from breast cancer increased 2% while men's rate of death from prostate cancer increased 25%. Until the last few years, you never heard anything about prostate cancer. Even today, it's not a high priority on health programs or the news. There's no postage stamp or brochures at the post office. (The second Breast Cancer postage stamp will soon be issued to raise awareness of breast cancer and to fund additional research.) There’s no special research or funding organizations for prostate cancer, no national prevention month, week or even day. This is not to say that everything that is being done to find a cure for breast cancer should not be done. However, where do men’s health issues fit in in your local news analysis and reporting? What about the fact that of the 15 leading causes of death, men lead in every single category. There are a lot of free screenings for breast cancer for poor women, none of any sort for poor men. One has only to look for the pink for many products rasing funds for breast cancer. Do you see any fund rasing for prostate cancer? Even during the prostate cancer awarness week in Sept, I saw more effort to raise awareness and funds for breast cancer then I did for prostate cancer. Oh yea...I sure do not see the feminist screaming about this....instead they are only screaming that there is a health care gap. There sure is...but is not against women! Is it not time to value ALL our people?
18 :
Where do you come from? Breast cancer is a leading killer in women. The pink ribbons is a successfull way of raising money and awareness of breast cancer. Don't bring abortion into this as abortion is not cancer. All the other cancers and conditions you mention are given attention and awareness as well.
19 :
I understand your question, but please be sensitive to those who have this disease or who have lost loved ones. Miscarriage, obesity, bottle feeding and other things also contribute to Breast Cancer. There can also be psychological factors influencing its development. Women who do not get on with their Mothers in Law also have a higher rate of Breast Cancer. My friend's mum died 20 years ago from Breast Cancer. She was a lovely Christian woman, who did not have an abortion. I am very anti abortion; but do not believe that this is an appropriate question with which to bring up the subject. We all need to dig into our pockets and help fund all research into all cancers. This would be impossible, so even to pick one charity and contribute would help.
20 :
Because one in seven women will come down with it in her lifetime, unlike every other affliction you named. Abortion cannot cause breast cancer. This is a hysterical scare tactic used by desperate anti-choice types.
21 :
My understanding is b/c breast cancer is more likely to kill a person (yes many men get it to)....the cancer starts out very close to the lymnoyds(sp) under the arm pit...and basically once it gets to those a person is done. This reminds me...I had a 50 year old women in one of my classes. She was amazing, dyed her very short hair bright pink and wore tee shirts...that said stuff like "bet you can guess which breast is real!" she was an amazing person...on top of just being really cool. As to abortion...baa please go take a biology course
22 :
It's a form of radical feminism that nutjob women keep advocating.
23 :
perhaps you are lucky enough to not know someone who has succumbed to this :)~
24 :
Because it is very marketable. I think it is simply the foundation that has been started for the promotion of curing it. While I agree, and feel that it is just important to cure all cancers, I do not think it is ever bad to promote research. Obviously money is not the issue here though. If money cured illnesses breast cancer would have been cured years ago. While we pile all of this money into the advancement of research, we have to remember that the research is the only thing that can cure cancer....not millions and millions of dollars of buying pink products who's profit often benefits retailers more than research. I think donating directly to the research of organizations that give directly to the research is more beneficial than buying from stores. Heart disease is a bigger issue and able to be prevented and controlled by the person. While I believe there has been much promotion of heart disease being the number one killer of women (and number two of men I believe) ...it has not caught on. Why? I believe it is largely to do with the lack of responsibility people have and lack of respect they have for their own bodies. Breast cancer is somewhat preventable, but is also largely genetic. heart disease is genetic as well, but is more so preventable though a healthy life style. I think many would rather pay five bucks to help prevent disease than get on a treadmill and put the fried brownie down.
25 :
Our society is catered to women in every aspect.... 1) grade school is catered for girls(with women outnumbering men in college-- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lENB8DPq_rs ) and boys/men are given mental disorders and drugs; 2) Now younger professional women make more than men; 17% higher in New York City and 20% higher in Dallas, being a few examples... and remember that the younger 30 and 20 year olds are the future. 3) Unequal parental rights... women initiate 75% of divorces and get custody nearly 80% of the time. 4) And to skip ahead to your issue... $21800 of government funding goes to Breast Cancer for every life lost and $16700 to Prostate Cancer for every life lost. ( http://www.fightprostatecancer.org/site/DocServer/Prostate_Cancer_Statistics-Funding_for_a_Cure.pdf?docID=203 ) ... but this doesn't paint a true picture because you must consider that this is only Government funding. As you have said, there are numerous charitable events and public donations to this, but no one really cares about men. If you included all other contributions besides government funding, the numbers would skyrocket. As someone else said, you have to fight to get special treatment if you want it. So the key is to "fight for it", which is basically to fight for special treatment over another group through 'Appeal to Emotions'. So, our society is sexist against men, and others have spelled out how to deal with it... start a group and "fight for it"... if you think it's wrong that people are sexist towards men, it's your fault that you didn't fight the sexism. If you disagree with Girl Power or Women Power, it's your fault for not starting a group to equal it out... right everyone? If you think it's wrong that our boys are held back, drugged, have their children kidnapped from them and made to pay the kidnapper(the mother) while they are making much less to begin with(used for reproduction and money and then thrown away like household trash---remember: women initiate 75% of divorces and marriage rates are less than half of what they were 30 years ago)... then it's your fault for not fighting to be equal. But I'm sure feminists will find a way to make even more money, drug boys more, ignore more of boys schooling, kill off men with diseases(or lack of care for diseases), ... Woman Power

Why does breast cancer get so much publicity

Why does breast cancer get so much publicity?
I think all types of cancer need to be given attention in the media. Why is there such a disproportionate focus on breast cancer? Also, does anyone feel that it's wrong to be using a serious illness to market products?

Breast cancer affects millions of women world-wide. Most ladies with breast cancer will die within a short period, or have major health problems. Ladies with it go through so much pain, physically, and mentally. It also puts their family through sadness. All cancer deserves special, but many people are dying because of it. Scientists are determined to find a cure and once it happens, they will surely move on to a diffrent disease!
2 :
Because it can KILL real quick if not diagnosed.
3 :
Here in Australia the most common forms of cancer are:- non-melanoma skin cancer (4 times the rate of Canada, USA or UK)( gets publicity in Australia) Prostate (guys don't like talking about it) Colorectal (bowel) (no-one likes talking about it) Breast (Guys like them and women aren't scared of discussing it so gets publicity) Melanoma (gets some publicity) Lung (gets publicity as the easisest to prevetnt - don't smoke!) Ad for using it to market products, the idea is to get publicity to raise awareness as awareness means we get earlier diagnosis and treatment. Early diagnosis and treatment is the best way to beat this disease.
4 :
The four most common forms of cancer in this country are: 1) skin cancer; 2) lung cancer; 3) prostate cancer; and 4) breast cancer. Skin cancer is preventable and can usually be treated without long-term effects. Lung cancer is preventable and does get a considerable amount of press attention. Prostate cancer is slow-growing, primarily affects older men, and is often left untreated because the patient will usually die of something else before the prostate cancer becomes a problem. That leaves breast cancer, which is less preventable and can lead to death if not diagnosed in time. It has gotten a lot of attention in the press because it matters to women and they have made it an issue.
5 :
It started with people truly concerned with research and development. They did a wonderful job, bringing the cancer to people's attention. The present Barbie-pink campaigns are commercialised and depend on dubious statistics and scare campaigns.
6 :
It is one of the most common cancers, that's the reason for the attention

How likely is it that I will have breast cancer

How likely is it that I will have breast cancer?
My mother's cousin has breast cancer and she is 35. Two of my mother's aunts had (and died from) breast cancer. My father's mother had breast cancer but had her breast removed. I am young and am not too worried about it now, but how likely is it that my sister or I will have breast cancer? My mother is being tested next week.

Well while I will say that this doesn't mean that you'll definitely develop cancer, there is a chance since it seems to run in your family. There's no real way to know for sure as far as I know. Lots of people in my family have had cancer, but it's all different types! As long as you keep yourself tested and aware, you should be fine. Early detection saves lives!
2 :
Breast cancer is a concern of all women no matter what age. Diet has come into the spotlight as our fist line of defense to help us prevent and fight against it. The National Cancer Institute has estimated that nearly one-third of all cancer related deaths may be related to what a person eats. Some of the things we eat such as foods high in saturated fats, hydrogenated products, as well as red meat and beer can harm us by increasing our chances of cancer. Luckily there are many choices we can eat to have a natural diet to fight breast cancer. Making choices for a breast cancer natural diet in actually pretty easy, and can be tastier and more filling than harmful junk and fast foods. Look for foods high in antioxidants, especially polyphenols. Foods like red wine, olive oil and especially green tea contain polyphenols. By weight, green tea leaves are actually 40% polyphenols! According to the Journal of Cellular Biochemistry, these antioxidants can protect against many types of cancer, as well as preventing existing cancer cells from dividing. Lycopene is another strong antioxidant that helps fight cancer by attacking free radicals in the body that are suspected of causing cancer. Lycopene is found in tomatoes, watermelons, carrots, and red peppers. Grapefruit, oranges and other citrus fruits contain monoterpenes, which are believed to help detoxify and clear carcinogens out of the body. Grapefruit is especially important when thinking of a breast cancer diet, because some studies have shown them to inhibit the proliferation of breast-cancer cells. Rosemary is another great detoxification agent. An extract of Rosemary called carnosol which has been shown to inhibit growth of breast tumors in animals. Seaweed and other ocean vegetables contain protein, vitamin B12, beta-carotene, fiber, and chlorophyll, which are all healthy and help protect against cancer. These plants also contain chlorophylones, which are important fatty acids in fighting breast cancer. Carrots, which are another vegetable high in beta carotene is considered one of the major cancer fighters when added to a breast cancer diet. For an added benefit, eating carrots raw preserves the falcarinol in the vegetable which has shown to slow cancer cell growth. Boosting your omega-3 fatty acid levels should also be an important part of developing a natural breast cancer diet. You can find high levels of these fatty acids in cold water fish like salmon, tuna, sardines and herring. Flax seed oil is another great way to introduce more omega-3 fatty acid into your diet, although some people can be slightly allergic to flax seed, so you should be careful when introducing into the diet for the first time. Couple these foods with a healthy lifestyle and exercise to maximize effects of a natural breast cancer fighting diet. Good luck...
3 :
It is rare for cancer to run in a family and there is no indication it runs in yours. You have a 1 in 8 lifetime risk of developing breast cancer - the same as every other woman. What you eat does not change this.
4 :
All the relatives you have listed are 2nd or 3rd degree relatives - normally not considered to increase your risk. 95% of women (you are probably in this category) have a 1 in 8 chance of getting breast cancer. 4% of women have a 1 in 4 risk. 1% of women have a 1 in 2 risk. Be vigilant, lead a generally healthy lifestyle including regular medical check-ups and you have a good chance of catching anything that may crop up quickly

How long will a dog live if we leave her breast cancer untreated

How long will a dog live if we leave her breast cancer untreated?
I noticed a small lump about the size of half of my thumb on my dog's nipple and a rice-sized lump near another one. It feels hard when you touch it but my dog doesn't seem to be in pain when we press on it. We think it's breast cancer but my parents say that since she's already 12 years old there's not point spending so much money on such a risky surgery. How long will she live from now if we don't do the surgery? How big will the tumor grow? And will she be in pain if we don't do the surgery?
Dogs - 5 Answers
Random Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
1 :
Well, first you would have to know that it is in fact cancer and the only way to tell for sure is to go to a vet. Many older dogs develop fatty tissue tumours that aren't cancerous and are just a side effect of the aging on their body. Dogs are more prone to liver cancer than anything else. Assuming it is cancer (which I'm not convinced that it is), she'll likely last about 6 months. The tumours can grow to any size but don't often get larger than a golf ball. And yes, if it is tumour, in her later stages she will be in a great amount of pain (just like any human that has cancer). The tumours press on tissues and nerves and cause high amounts of pain. If you should choose not to do anything, your dog will suffer. If you discover it is cancer and can't be bothered spending the money on surgery and treatment, the most humane thing you can do is to put your dog down and end the suffering of the poor animal.
2 :
I wonder if you can get your fingers under the tumor. It could just be a lump. Your parents are right, at her age the anesthesia would probably be too much for her to handle. A vet probably couldn't do the surgery without risking her life from the surgery or the anesthesia. It would be hard for us to just guess things like that. Assuming it is a tumor, assuming it is cancer, depending on her current health, she could go on to live several years, or maybe not that long, we don't have the right to guess things like that. It isn't fair to you or your dog. It would make more sense to take her to the vets, or call the vet/vet tech and find out what is really going on, before you make yourself upset when you shouldn't be. Peace be with you.
3 :
Mammary cancer is highly treatable (most forms) I can not imagine not going in for a diagnosis. For some breeds 12 is not that old. Your parents are teaching you quite a lesson here. I guess when they get old and you make the health decisions for them, you can do the same thing and see how they like it. ADD: In my 40+ years of dog ownership of over 45 dogs, I have had PLENTY of dogs who had surgical procedures AFTER the age of 12. There is no reason an otherwise healthy dog can not have anasthesia as todays anasthesias are easily matabolized. Pre surgical bloodwork would let you know if your dog was a candidate for surgery
4 :
Is there any chance your dog is pregnant? If so, that could be the reason. Also, the lump could be a benign fiberous cyst which are harmless, or an inward boil which would only need an antibiotic. Is the lump growing and, if so, how fast is it growing? Usually, if healthy, a large dog will live to be 8-12 years old. A small dog could live to be 14-15. The larger the dog, the shorter the lifespan, usually. Are the cysts bothering your dog at all? If it is cancer, when your dog begins to show signs of discomfort, it's time to do something to alleviate his or her pain. You may want to ask your vet what type of pain reliever you can give her or him. But, if that doesn't work, then don't let her suffer......
5 :
It may not be breast cancer it may just be a fat tumor although fat tumors are usually soft. It seems as though when doctors or vets start removing cancer it seems to set something off and the cancer seems to spread faster..that's what a lot of people i know believe as well. My rottweiler was 12 years old when i found out she had breast cancer..my vet decided to remove it and three months later it came back but worse then what she had it before..i ended up putting her to sleep because she was so full of it that it started causing problems with her balance and bladder and i couldn't stand to see her suffer

Does the size of your breast increase your chances of having breast cancer?
I have DD's and most the women in my family do as well. But none of them to my knowledge have ever been diagnosed with breast cancer. But doses breast size increase your chances of breast cancer or not?

no. part genetics, part environmental influences. dont forget monthly self exam and yearly mammogram (depending on ur age, of course)
2 :
No, breast cancer is genetic. It has little to nothing to do with the size of your breasts hon. Still if you are 25 or over get a yearly breast exam. You can find more information on the following link: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Breast_cancer Hope this helps answer your question

What is the earliest age for breast cancer

What is the earliest age for breast cancer?
What I mean by this is that I checked my right breast last night and my nipple looked weird to me. Right on my nipple (the lower part) looked like a bump. I felt it and It did kinda feel like a bump. Do you think is may be cancer?

It's always hard to tell. They really don't know how old you have to be to get cancer. If it concerns you, see a doc. That's your best bet. I would rather go and have them tell me it's nothing than to go later when it's much worse and have them yell at me for not coming in sooner.
2 :
Its VERY good that you check yourself. It doesn't mean that the lump is cancer. It can be a cyst. I have them and it scared me to death when I first found it. Just got to the dr. to be sure. I've read that woman as young as late twenties get breast cancer now.
3 :
If anything looks strange you should always just go to the doctor. Never mess around with anything that looks questionable. It could be absolutely nothing and in that case if it is then your doctor can tell you what you should be looking for. I'm not sure how old you are but I have heard of a 19 year old girl having breast cancer but as far as I know that is pretty rare. I had a scare a couple of years ago when I found a lump and had to go through surgury to have it removed. So I understand it can be a scary thing but just to ease your mind go to the doctor and get checked out.
4 :
There is really no age limit as even men can get breast cancer. If you do have a bump, share it with your mother and ask her to make an appointment to see a doctor to make sure. Most of the time, it turns out to be nothing, but on the few chances that it might, getting to it early is the best medicine.
5 :
i beleive the youngest age of someoen with breast cancer is 14

What is combined modality treatment for breast cancer

What is combined modality treatment for breast cancer?
Can you explain that to me please? For the intial stage of breast cancer that is.
Cancer - 4 Answers
Random Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
1 :
for intial stage of breast cancer, u may, kindly, consult a local homoeopath. with best compliments from www.saioam.com
2 :
The lump and maybe surrounding tissue and lymph nodes are removed (surgical modality). If lymph nodes are cancerous then radiation (another modality) and chemo are used.
3 :
The latest American Cancer Society data indicates that 89% of newly diagnosed breast cancers are now cured with current therapy which is usually combined modality, so I STRONGLY suggest NOT using homeopathic treatment for a deadly disease that is now so often cured with mainstream therapy. Most primary breast cancers are now treated with lumpectomy and radiation therapy - two modalities - 1. surgery and 2. radiation. [Mastectomy is much less common today.] A third modality 3. Chemotherapy - drugs usually given by vein that can kill cancer cells throughout the body - is recommended if the primary breast cancer shows signs that suggest a significant possibility of microscopic distant spread of the malignant cells. Added note - I should correct that the 89% figure is for five year survivals which is not truly a "cure" for breast cancer since it can come back after five years in some cases - - But, it is necessary to have an initial five year disease free interval to eventually realize a "cure." We do not know about "cures" for sure until maybe 20 years have gone by. Clearly the vast majority of stage I and II breast cancers patients are cured with current combined modality therapy. I would suggest homeopathic therapy for pancreatic cancer, advanced non-small cell lung cancers, and other types of cancer for which rational, scientific, modern medicine has no good treatment.
4 :
combined modality treatment means combinations of all modalities...the modalities for cancer are surgery , radiotherapy and chemo. These are used one after the other for a breast cancer. for initial stage patient is taken up for surgery first If breast conservation surgery done then radiotherapy follows surgery which is followed by chemo. otherwise after total removal of breast or mastectomy chemo only. followed by hormonal therapy depending on hormonal status

What are my chances of getting breast cancer

What are my chances of getting breast cancer?
I am 25. On my dad's side, his sister had breast cancer. I also believe my great grandmother as well. On my mom's side, her sister, and my great grandmother. I haven't been to the doctor in awhile. Insurance kicks in soon, then I will go get a FULL exam. I am just wondering.

Your chances are the same as the rest of us – 1 in 8 over your lifetime. You do not need a mammogram until you are 40, unless you have some sort of problem before then.
2 :
Hereditary cancer is rare; fewer than 10% of all cancer cases are hereditary. Cancer diagnosed after the age of 50 is even less likely to be hereditary. Only 5 - 10% of all breast cancer cases are hereditary. A sign that breast cancer MAY be hereditary is when several members of the same side of a family have had it, especially if some developed it at a younger than usual age (under 50). In those circumstances genetic testing may be considered appropriate to establish whether the breast cancer is due to one of the rare hereditary faulty genes known to be responsible for hereditary breast cancer. With one in eight women developing breast cancer over a lifetime of 80 years, it's not unusual for an extended family to have two or more members who hae had non-hereditary breast cancer. In your family circumstances you won't be offered genetic testing when you have your full medical examination. For information, fewer than 0.1% of all those diagnosed with breast cancer are under 30, and only 5% are under 40

How has the treatment of breast cancer evolved over the past 10 years

How has the treatment of breast cancer evolved over the past 10 years?
So i am writing an research paper on how the treatment of breast cancer evolved over the past 10 years.I've looked on most breast cancer history sites and i can't find much. mostly surgery was the most effective way.Can anyone suggest sites please Thanks

I think with breast cancer more of the recent improvements have come in the screening techniques. Many more women are being diagnosed at early stages, then say 15-20 years ago. This is due to self-awareness, as well regular check-ups. At early stages, breast cancer is almost always curable.
2 :
Surgery is still the most effective way. The only significant changes close to the 10 year mark would be the use of immunohistochemistal evaluation of lymph nodes and BRCA 1 and 2 testing is more common now. Digital mammograms used now are better.
3 :
Avastin is an anti-angiogenic drug used to slow tumor growth of metastatic breast cancer. It was first approved for metastatic bowel cancer but gained FDA approval a couple of years ago for metastatic breast cancer. Trials are underway for use in patients with non-metastatic breast cancer. This is just one example of the many treatment gains of the last ten years, but it should get you a couple of extra paragraphs. ;)

What treatment is out there for small brain tumors that come from breast cancer

What treatment is out there for small brain tumors that come from breast cancer?
My daughter has tumors now in her brain from the breast cancer. The breast cancer tumors stopped growing and shrank slightly from treatment with ixempra and xeloda. What treatment works best for the brain tumors?

Now I don't know if you're joking or what?! I would seem rude but I have to tell you. This is not the place nor the people that can give you proper medical advice about such complex treatments especially with the very less information you gave. Ask your doctor he knows better. If you're being naive you are just being ignorant and inconsiderate.
2 :
From reading your mail, I understand your daughter's primary cancer is breast cancer. Normally, if the treatment is successful for that cancer, the cancer cells in her brain will be eliminated too. The primary cancer treatment usually treats the secondary cancer too as far as I know.......however, whilst I have a keen interest in cancer treatments, I am not an expert and I suggest you contact your local cancer support group or services if you require a definitive answer.
3 :
Ahhhh, I am sooooo sorry. I went to www.healthline.com which is one of two websites I use frequently. I clicked on "diseases and conditions" and the alphabet comes up. I clicked on "B" hoping for "brain tumor". There is much information regarding brain tumors. Too much to begin to quote here. This is quite a serious question and I hope you do not depend on the answers you will get from a bunch of us who are not Oncologists. I DO hope you have taken these questions to your doctor. Her breast cancer spread to her brain before the original breast cancer could be treated. I'm sorry. There are treatments out there. However, none are cures, but may extend her life. I don't know about quality of life, however. I'm sorry. Please read the site for yourself. I hope you and your daughter know God and seek His help through prayer. He can cure. God bless you both. My prayers are with you. I am an RN

What are the chances of me getting breast cancer

What are the chances of me getting breast cancer?
My grandma and mother both got diagnosed with breast cancer when they were 33, and my grandma only had it once, but my mother had it four times. i heard it was gentic, and i am wondering if maybe there is an oncologist that would know what my chances are. my grandma and mother both lived through all cancer(s). I am 12 right now. oh crap, are you serious, will i most likely get it?
Cancer - 7 Answers
Random Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
1 :
About 76 to77 percent!
2 :
I think its around what the first answerer said but im not sure.. What you need to do is live healthy, eat lots of vegetables! =)
3 :
well, i can tell you that it's higher than 70% but you shouldn't have to worry about it for a while. As long as you get checked once in a while, you should be fine! if its caught at an early stage, it can be treated!
4 :
You have a 50/50 chance you have inherited the gene from your mother if she had the genetic form of breast cancer. Only about 10&% of breast cancers are hereditary, but given their young age when diagnosed, your mother and Grandmother probably were. If you have the gene, then you have a high risk, if not you have an average risk. Treat yourself as a high risk, and act accordingly. Have regular check-ups. Do regular self checks. Talk to your Dr so you are well informed on what increases and reduces your risk regarding diet, medications, vitamin supplements etc. As you have seen, breast cancer is treatable, especially if caught early.
5 :
Genetically you are in the high risk category (50 - 75%). However, given the new advanced in medicine it is very possible that gene therapy or some other treatment will come along to decrease the possibility. On of my nursing instructors in the 1970s stated that over the next fifty years we would find that the vast majority of diseases had a genetic cause. I am astonished how accurate her prediction has come to be over the past decades. Hope this helps ...
6 :
First of all, don't rely on anonymous people to give you statistics and answers on your chances of getting breast cancer. We're not clairvoyant or doctors. The best thing you could do is talk to your mom or doctor, express your concern about breast cancer and when you're old enough, do self-exams and yearly exams. Keep proactive and don't live in fear or in the "what ifs" because that's not a life. You're young. Enjoy your life and again talk to your mom and doctor for answers. NOBODY here can tell you that you'll get breast cancer.
7 :
Tarkarri is right, and your other answerers have given you incomplete information. If your mother's breast cancer was due to one of the rare inherited faulty BRCA genes known to be responsible for hereditary breast cancer, then you have a 50% chance of having inherited that gene - and of course a 50% chance that you didn't. If you did inherit a faulty gene from your mother, that does not mean you will definitely get breast cancer, but that your chances are increased; it would mean you had between a 50% and 80% chance of developing it by age 70. If your mother carries a faulty gene and you HAVEN'T inherited it, then your risk of breast cancer is no greater than anyone else's. Breast cancer is not usually hereditary - only 5 - 10% of cases are. Because your mother and grandma (I'm assuming it's your mother's mother) had breast cancer at a young age, it may well be that it was due to one of the inherited BRCA genes - they can be tested for this if they haven't been alreaady. If so you will be offered testing when you are older to see if you carry that gene. One of my friends carries one of the BRCA genes and both her adult daughters have been tested for it - one has inherited it, the other hasn't. Talk to your mother about this. At your present age your risk of breast cancer is very close to zero whether your mother's and grandmother's cancers were hereditary or not

How do I help my sister get through her breast cancer treatment

How do I help my sister get through her breast cancer treatment ?
My sister was recently told she has breast cancer. I am her big brother and not sure how to help get through this ordeal. I am so afraid of losing her. But I want to be supportive and not bring her down. What can I do?
Cancer - 6 Answers
Random Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
1 :
just be there for her. if she needs something or needs to talk be there . in the meantime you are gonna need someone to talk to you yourself so you can be a good support for your sister............................good luck! e mail me if you want. I had a 3 yr old with cancer terrinjohn89@adelphia.net
2 :
Try to not bring it up, but when SHE does just tell her that you're there for her and let her now you're there all the way. Other then that, there is nothing else you can do. Physically, you can help her with daily tasks, like cleaning, etc... because the treatment she will recieve will more than likely weaken her. So just talk to her. Keep her mind off of it, and just love her like you always have. Having cancer is not a death sentence. Its a good chance she will be ok, remind her. Good luck to you and your sister.
3 :
First off, I'm very sorry for your sister's cancer. The waiting period is often difficult for a cancer patient, so listening to them, and sharing their pain can sometimes help. I also heard zoo therapy is good (bringing an animal boosts their feel-good hormones).I know you're afraid, but try and be hopeful, there are many people surviving the disease and your sister will be one of those too. I wish you both the best, God bless, -Sarah-
4 :
Clean her house, mow her lawn, buy her groceries, cook her meals, babysit for her....basically treat her like a queen! She needs all the support she can get AND she'll love you for it!
5 :
Offer to take her to appointments. Often times a sister needs her brother to talk to her and visit with her as he always has before. If you show her that you are positive that she'll pull through this then she will believe it herself. Remember that because she has cancer doesn't mean that she is a different person now. Best of luck to you, your sister and the rest of your family.
6 :
Just be there with her. The treatments can make her tired and sometimes sick. She just needs to know that you will be there for her, whether she is sad or happy. she needs to be able to talk to you and know when you are looking at her, that you don't feel sorry for her. Treat her the same as you always have. She will have good days and bad ones, but she has to know she can count on you. My very best to you and your sister

What are some good presents for people struggling with breast cancer

What are some good presents for people struggling with breast cancer?
I know a lady in her late 40's early 50's that has just found out she has breast cancer. It has really gotten her down. She has just started kemo. I want to get her something to help her through these times since she has no one really to talk to. What are some cd's or books that might help her spirit in these hard times?

An inspirational book or CD is a great idea, although I cannot think of any. A nice gift might be a gift certificate to a spa so she can get a massage or facial or mani/pedi. Hoepfully that would help her relax a bit and allow her to pamper herself a little

How can I be most supportive of my best friend who has breast cancer

How can I be most supportive of my best friend who has breast cancer?
My friend had a mastectomy but is undergoing chemotherapy that is making her sick. Now she fears that the cancer has gone to her bones as she is having severe pain in her knee and needs to use a walker to get around. Does anyone know if breast cancer can progress to bone cancer? Also what are some things I might be able to do to encourage her? She puts up a very brave and stoic front but I know she is frightened. Thank you.

Just continue being her best friend, try not to treat her any differently, a smile and a laugh are the best medicine you can give her.
2 :
I haven't any personal experience, but I would guess it comforts your freind to have somebody to talk to, somebody she can trust, somebody she can tell her fears to. Being there for her is probably the best thing you can do and I'm sure she appreciates it. Best wishes to you both.
3 :
Pamper her and just be htere for her in all ways but don't like do it out of pity
4 :
Take her to her Dr visits. Help her with questions to the medical professionals. Sometimes you need to talk for them when they're tired and weak. Breast cancer can indeed spread. Maybe find music that she likes. Find encouraging stories and books of other breast cancer survivors. Make her nutritious meals.
5 :
i agree with the first answer! do the things u use to did when she wasnt sick like nothing has changed ... and just be there at any time if she wants to call you in the middle of the night or anything do it for her ... i know shes also sad because she can feel that ur hurt too ....
6 :
check out CHEMO ANGELS.COM IT IS A GREAT WEBSITE WITH LOADS OF INFO AND CANCER STUFF

I know that cancer can spread, but breast cancer is one of the most successfully treated cancers there are so there is good reason for hope. My wife had breast cancer 6 years ago. Her are some things that were most encouraging for her and the things that were not encouraging. Not encouraging: The endless suggestions that people gave us for natural medicine alternatives. My wife is a nurse, she wanted to use things that were proven, not an experiment. People who tried to convince her that they could identify with her but really had never experienced anything like what she was going through. People who offered the "cosmic answer" to why she was going through this. What helped: We had a lady who offered to bring meals over the day after she went though chemo. This was very appriciated. We had a family who gave my wife a cleaning service that came in once a week and cleaned. This was appriciated. I made a commitment never to leave the house in the morning unless everything was cleaned up and put away. My wife can't rest in a messy house and I think this made a difference. Lot's of listening, but also lot's of initiating conversation about normal everyday circumstances. When you have cancer, lot's of people ask how's it going. Answering this question a thousand times is very exhausting emotionally. My wife loved it when someone came along and talked exclusively about what was happening with them and she didn't have to answer questions about herself. Cards that express that you are thinking of this person without lines of optimizin from "rose colored glasses". Simply "I'm thinking of you." Is much more real and benificial than, "I know it'll all work out in the end." Also, we have 3 kids. My wife appreciated families who reached out to our children and gave them a place to talk about their emotional ups and downs through the process. Our son was a teenager at the time. He rarely talked to us about what was going on and only asked one question. What we found is that he was talking to the parents of a friend of his and getting support there. Sure, we felt a little like we were out of the loop. But the important thing is he found a safe place to process his emotions. My wife found comfort in this. Best wishes
8 :
Only thing you can do is be her friend. Let her know it is okay to put up that front, because I am sure you have put up a front just so she could not see your pain.
9 :
I´m with MrNiceGuy - like his answer! Do what you can and most of all be her friend. Don´t back down or make an emotional conversation an awkward one - if she can dump her fears on you and you can sit and cry together you´re doing what most people can´t!! Absolutely priceless! Unfortunately, her breast cancer can spread to all sorts of place including the bones. She needs more diagnostics to rule that out or verify it, just because some parts of her body hurt doesn´t mean those are metastases. Good luck to your friend and I am so glad she has such a good and considerate friend that is trying to be there for her!!!!
10 :
The best medicine for a friend in need is, follow through support. What I mean is just do things for her that you know she would like. She may not ask or tell you, but just do them. Even if it's just planning a relaxing day away from her problems. Making a meal, doing her landury, doing the chores she doesn't really like to do. That's a friend. Don't wait to be asked. I am a massage therapist and anyone who is having health issues, whether mild or life threating, should know about this product. It has helped many of my clients. So try it yourself and pass the site along to your friends and family. If you need more info, the people that contact you are very understanding and helpful. They even have live interactive doctors calls availible weekly. It is even listed on cancer .org as an alternative, this year. I pray this helps you and God bless your friend.
11 :
You have to be the greatest friend you have ever been to anyone in your whole life. Listen to your friend, hear what she is saying, and love her...Cry with her, laugh with her and let her know that you will be there for her no matter what. Cancer is so scary and to get better you have to go through so so many changes emotionally, physically, mentally,. I am hoping that your friends bone pain is from her treatment and not from the cancer spreading. Many times you have muscle aches and pain, bones hurt, sick to your stomach, hair falls out, you just feel miserable. Just try to encourage her to not let bad things creep into her mind. I know this is so very hard to do. People who have cancer like you said are very brave and very stoic because they don't want the people around them to be sad because they are dealing with so much themselves. I will keep you and your friend in my prayers. God-bless
12 :
No matter where it goes it is still breast cancer. yes it can go to the bone. They call it bony mets. She should talk to her doctor. They do scans to see if it has gone to other organs. It is a very scary time for her. Today there is a lot of options and different treatments. Just be her friend and let her lead in what she needs volunteer your help but don't be pushy. Best to you both

How can I incorperate the breast cancer symbol into this tattoo

How can I incorperate the breast cancer symbol into this tattoo?
I'm getting both of my outer front thighs tattooed, it'll be a rose on each and right under, on the left side says "Live" and the right side says "Free" under the roses in a nice script. My mum has breast cancer, and I want to have the breast cancer ribbon symbol thing somewhere in one, or both of the roses. How should I do this? :)

what's the difference between regular breast lumps and breast cancer lumps

what's the difference between regular breast lumps and breast cancer lumps?
I don't know what the difference would be between regular lumps in breasts and cancerous lumps. 2 years ago I was a 34 A now, I'm a 34 D 5 foot 5 130 pounds...i have bigger boobs then my mom & my older sister & my dad and I have big lumps in my chest that hurt a little when I touch them, but I'm too young for breast cancer.... so whats the difference between regular lumps & cancerous lumps? also, what are some other symptoms?

The difference between cancerous lumps and non-cancerous lumps is the tyope of cells they are composed of. With their training, Dr's can classify lumps as suspicious or not suspicious. Of those they classify as suspicious and send for further investgation, 80% are not cancerous. If in doubt, see your Dr and get them checked. Breast cancer is rarely tender, so this is a good sign, but it can be in uncommon cases. Breast cancer rarely occurs symetrically, so this is another good sign, but again it can be. You say you are young, so it sounds unlikely that you have breast cancer, but a Dr is the only way to know for sure. Breast size is irrelevant in breast cancer diagnosis, you could have a AA cup or a EE cup and have the same risk.
2 :
take vitamin e and Tylenol it helps
3 :
It sounds to me like they are cysts. Breast Cancer lumps rarely hurt. Your doctor can tell if they are cysts - the doctor usually inserts a needle and extracts the fluid to tell if they are cysts or breast cancer lumps or tumors. Getting them checked out is best. Nurse Addison

Is a tattoo of a breast cancer tattoo worng if I never had it

Is a tattoo of a breast cancer tattoo worng if I never had it?
I want a breast cancer tattoo with the ribbon and flowers around it that mean support, beauty, and strength. The thing is, is that I have never had breast cancer in my family. But I really love to support it and I think the victims are so strong. What can I do?

You seem to have a someone idealised view of people who have cancer. I think a lot of "victims" would just want to smack you if you said "You're so strong." Given the option, they'd run from cancer but they don't have that option so they deal with it as best they can. They're not some saintly breed of person different from everyone else. Plus, if you're going to have a tattoo, I'm not sure something that reminds you of cancer each time you see it is the way to go.
2 :
It's your body. And if you feel strong about it, then by all means do it. Don't let anyone change what YOU want and feel song about.
3 :
I'm a testicular cancer survivor and I know that there is a new movement against ribbons and wristbands, because some people feel like they've been overused and have lost their meaning. A large international awareness group for TC actually uses "No Ribbons. No Wristbands. No Regrets." as their slogan. If you feel strongly about your tattoo, I would do what you want to, but as a cancer patient I can tell you that you'd show more support by volunteering in a cancer treatment center. Plus, if the fad of ribbons goes away, you won't be stuck with it

Can parents be screened for breast cancer

Can parents be screened for breast cancer?
Also, are their prenatal tests avalible for breast cancer? And can you discover breast cancer by karyotyping?

I believe that you are talking about genetic testing for genes linked w/breast cancer.. a controversial issue in some ways, but certainly doable for adults. I, myself, am not a big fan of genetic testing as I think that medical opinion in general is too weighted on the genetic side of cancer vs. the environment and lifestyle influences. For instance, my mom had breast cancer. I had uterine cancer. Does that seem to make great genetic sense? And what about area breast cancer clusters.. surely they signify something. I'm afraid that people will let genetic info give them a sense of doom that isn't necessary. I think it could lead people to surgeries that are unnecessary. (you know some people have prophylactic surgeries meaning to say they have surgeries though they are healthy so that they feel that they aren't taking a risk) I think we are at a point in medicine where we are too apt to prescribe surgeries when other approaches can be taken (for instance, my former doctor told me to have surgery and basically mocked me when I suggested otherwise.. here I am almost 5 years later w/o surgery) Anyways, I will get off my soapbox now, and maybe someone can give you more info.
2 :
The genetic testing for BRCA1 and BRCA2 is a relatively simple blood test but it may take from 4 weeks to several months to get the results. It has been 6 weeks for me and still waiting results. I had breast cancer 3 years ago and come from a large family 1 sister and 1 aunt have also had it and have 40+ nices and nephews who should be made aware of the possible risks so they can take whatever action they feel is appropriate for themselves. There are a lot of pros and cons to being tested. There is some very good information at this site on the pros and cons. The biggest issue that I am aware of is if you have been tested, you may be denied insurance or have your insurance cancelled

What are the risks of getting breast reconstruction when you didn't have breast cancer

What are the risks of getting breast reconstruction when you didn't have breast cancer?
I'm eligible for breast reconstruction because of the different sizes of my breasts, I've been reading up about the risks of having the procedure done and most of what I find is about getting it done after having breast cancer. I want to know if the risks are lower or different for me since I didn't have breast cancer, seeing it mentions having radiation and everything for cancer treatment.
Women's Health - 1 Answers
Random Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :

You say you are having reconstruction because of the asymmetry of your breasts, I am guessing that either you are having one reduced or an implant in the other. If this is the case, your chances of having breast cancer depend on which option. Having one reduced also reduces your chances since you have "less breast tissue" ,although a negligible factor. Having an implant could, although unlikely, prevent a a cancer from being detected from the implant obscuring the tissue

How would I start a scrapbooking fundraising event for Breast Cancer Awareness

I wonder if your local scrapbooking store would let you host an event there and donate the sales of all things "Pink" to Susan G. Komen. It would be a tax deduction for their business and also, chances are that people will buy more than just pink items. Even people who do not normally scrapbook would participate because they believe in the cause. We have a local store that has a room and will let you sit at a table and use their cutting machines as long as you have purchased more than ten dollars worth of stuff. You could probably find a local deli to donate a sandwich tray or two and make it a whole day. Another thought; Those of us who scrap have all kinds of extras. I bought a pack of 30 when all I needed was two. You could host an event where people bring their scrap booking extras and trade and share. You'll have to make sure you have plenty of table space for people to work and several stations for crickets and other implements. Have participants pay an entry fee of ten dollars and some kind of prepackaged food item. (This way people aren't so worried about cleanliness of others kitchens) like bags of chips and cookie trays and pizzas. This is something you could do once a month. Good luck

You could go to a local church or recreation center as these places have conference rooms usually for a low cost, especially when it comes to causes such as yours. As for donating the money, there are many non-profit breast cancer awareness or finding a cure, The only name I know off the top of my head is the Susan B.Coman (sp?) Foundation. I hope this tad of info helped a little:) Jessica Ozmina Sea Shore Scrappers - yahoo group

I would start by considering how you can best help minimize the number of instances of cancer. Most fundraisers are supported by drug companies and other medical institutions that have a vested interest in treatment rather than prevention. Nutritional researchers like Dr. Caldwell Esselstyn, Jr. and Dr. Neal Barnard and Dr. T. Colin Campbell have discovered a link between diet and cancer growth. Certain foods, like diary and other animal food products and flavor enhancers (excitotoxins) promote the growth of tumors. The standard American diet has excess oils and animal proteins that cause most instances of cancer. We would have a small fraction of the cases of cancer if more people followed a healthier lifestyle. Although I am an atheist, I strongly suggestion is that you take a class from the Seventh Day Adventists called "Guarding your Heart." You will learn how to eat a healthy whole foods diet that will sustain you and make you feel more alert and alive. Cancer has a cure, it is a radical improvement to diet and lifestyle. Being aware of a disease after it has a foot hold in your body seems like an incomprehensible approach to this disease. Prevention is more powerful than treatment
