Question regarding losing weight with breast cancer and other problems

Question regarding losing weight with breast cancer and other problems?
So, my mom is overweight and in her fifties. She just went through breast cancer and previously had knee surgery. She doesn't exercise much and has a horrible diet. What are the steps that she should take in-order to lose weight and feel healthy?

3 Easy, But Highly Effective Weight Loss Tips! 1. Keep a Food Journal. By keeping a food journal, you will also be able to see more easily what food you're eating, and from where possible unwanted calories could be coming. You could for example keep a weekly or monthly food journal where you list all the food you are going to eat, or just add the food you have been eating afterwards. This way you will also be able to see your food choices more easily, and also hopefully help you keep you more motivated to achieve your goals, when you see your food choices more in black and white. 2. Eat More Instead of Starving Yourself. Research has shown that it's better to eat more often instead of less or skipping meals, if you want to lose excess fat. This is also why you should try to eat 5 - 6 smaller meals every day instead of trying to starve yourself. Your smaller meals could for example consist of breakfast, lunch and dinner, together with 2 - 3 snacks throughout the day. Your snacks could preferably consist of healthy fruit or vegetable snacks, which won't put on fat to your body. 3. Try to Lose Weight More Slowly. Instead of trying to lose weight rapidly in a short amount of time, try to take it more slowly over time. For example it can often be hard to lose a lot of weight fast. But if you instead set up a goal to lose 5 - 10 pounds per month, you are also much more likely to succeed. Small steps finally adds up to a big one, and by taking your weight loss step-by-step, you will also increase your chances to finally lose those unwanted pounds. Also Pay Close Attention To This:

Can someone provide me links about government funding for breast cancer as opposed to prostate cancer

Can someone provide me links about government funding for breast cancer as opposed to prostate cancer?
I would like to know the differences between the funding from the federal government (especially during the very beginning of both movements) to these charities. I am quite sure that breast cancer research has always been given much higher funding from the federal government but I am curious as to whether or not the unequal funding for breast cancer research foundations (in comparison to prostate cancer foundations) is what directly caused the mass awareness of breast cancer and the general neglect of prostate cancer.

Suggest that you read the history of breast cancer awareness and try to understand the social ramifications that fueled the priority for breast cancer research . . it is obvious you are too young to remember the events that led up to the 'war on cancer declared in 1971' and the womens liberation movement during that time period.
2 :
No one here is going to do research for you. If it is that important to you, you will do it. No government started the “mass awareness of breast cancer” that was done by everyday men and women who were sick and tired of people, mostly women, who were dying of the disease. How do you figure there has been a general neglect of prostate cancer? The use of PSA for early detection was started in the 1990s. The use of robots to do prostatectomies began in the last 10 years. A vaccine for advanced prostate cancer was approved by the FDA this year. Do you really believe every cancer should be funded equally? Do you believe only women die from breast cancer?

What is the risk of breast cancer if you have an aunt/cousin who has it

What is the risk of breast cancer if you have an aunt/cousin who has it?
My aunt (2nd cousin of my mother) has stage II breast cancer and she's in her late 70s. What is our risk of getting the same disease?

genetic factors account for about 40% of breast cancers in terms of families having some genes - its not always the case but it has been shown that u have a higher chance in terms of a close relative or relatives that have had breast cancer.
2 :
Only 5 - 10% of breast cancer cases are due to hereditary factors. Most breast cancer cases are random; my oncologist was able to assure me that mine wasn't hereditary and that my female relatives are not at increased risk. As it is not a close relative who has breast cancer, and as she is in her seventies - the younger you are when a cancer occurs, the more likely it is that an inherited genetic tendency has played a part - it is unlikely that you or your mother are at increased risk.
3 :
Unfortunately, one of the greatest risk factors of breast cancer is age. The older you are the more likely you are to get it. Unless your aunt has genetic testing to confirm, (and the questionaire for the testing doesn't even go into that extended family) or if there had been a lot of breast, cervical and even prostate cancer (they're all linked to the same genes) chances are you are not predispositioned to breast cancer. But, like any other woman, you need to do breast self-exams and have your screening mammos when you reach that age. I wish you and your family health.

Sadly, I don't know much that can be done to prevent it, other than eating VERY healthy and working out. Also, sadly now-a-days, I know young women, getting breast cancer, or it's called breast cancer, AND THERE IS NO FAMILY HISTORY. How they can explain that one, is beyond me.
2 :
I guess you are in a greater risk than those who dont have history of cancer in their family but that doens't mean you are going to get it. Doctors recomend to eat healthy, little meat and pork. Lots of fish. Broccoli helps prevent ovarian cancer, eat lots of greens. Doctors say too that women 35 years old taking the pill and smoking have a greater risk too of developing breast cancer, overweigth is another factor too.
3 :
Only 5-10% of breast cancer cases are due to hereditary factors, the rest are random. You say that your mother has been tested and found negative - do you mean she has been tested for one of the faulty BRCA genes that are the cause of hereditary cancer? Although most cases aren't hereditary, with your family history, and particularly with most of the family members being young when they got it, it does sound as if you might be at increased risk - unless your mother has tested negative for the faulty genes, in which case I think I'm right in saying you won't have the gene. That's the first thing you need to know; your mother may already know whether your relatives' cancer was hereditary. Other than hereditary factors, nobody knows what causes breast cancer, and so nobody knows how to prevent it. No foods or diets have been shown to have any effect. I used to think my organic vegan diet would protect me from cancer, but it didn't. There are known risk factors, some avoidable and some not, but they ARE only risk factors; having one, some or all of them does not mean you will get breast cancer, and many, many people who are diagnosed with breast cancer have none of these risk factors. They are: Genetic – but only 5-10% of breast cancers are genetic/hereditary Getting older - the greatest risk factor Having children at an older age or not at all. The more children a woman has may also slightly lower her risk. Breast-feeding helps protect against the disease. The longer a woman breastfeeds her children, the more she lowers her risk. Starting periods at a younger than average age (under 12) or having a late menopause (after 55) . Taking the contraceptive pill or hormone replacement therapy (HRT) causes a small increase in risk. However, the risk gradually returns to normal after you stop taking them. Being overweight (especially after the menopause). Regularly drinking more than 1 unit of alcohol per day slightly increases the risk of breast cancer. Having a previous diagnosis of breast cancer increases the risk of developing a new cancer in the other breast. As I said though, someone may tick all of these boxes, and never get cancer.

What happens if you have breast cancer, and you decide not to have therapy

What happens if you have breast cancer, and you decide not to have therapy?
i know its quite a sensative topic and all, but i was just wondering, if you get breast cancer and decide to not have therapy, and deside to die from it, do you lose your hair? do you have pains? do you get tired or stressed out? does your eating stop? i'm just curious. i hope no-one takes this the wrong way.

The cancer will undoubtedly spread and invade your other organs. It would be quite painful. You would in all likelihood lose weight and become fatigued all the time before you die. My first cousin ignored her symptoms before she sought treatment. Unfortunately it was too late. The cancer spread and she passed a few years ago.
2 :
Why would you not want to get therapy if you got breast cancer,I mean does life mean that little to you.If I had a choice of either dieing or taking radiation therapy or even having one or both breasts removed,I think I'd choose life.About seventeen years ago my mother had breast cancer, she had to have one breast removed and all the lymph nodes taken out under her arm and she went through the therapy. She is ,happy to say cancer free for 17 years now and proof that breast cancer can be beaten if you take the therapy and fight it with everything you have.I'm sure that if you decide not to take therapy there will eventually be pain that gets worse as time progresses getting to the point you probably couldn't stand it.The cancer would eventually spread to other parts of your body eating you up from the inside out weakening you to the point you can't go on living.I wouldn't wish this on my worst enemy so why would even think of something like this.
3 :
The same thing that will happen if you cut your arm off in an accident and "decide not to" get treatment; eventually the most probable consequence of such a silly decision is death. But it wouldn't happen, most likely, because under the law anyone making such a daft "decision" would be committed (as mentally incompetent) and then treated for the (very treatable) breast cancer. Breast cancer survival rates with therapy are in the high 80% range, so "deciding not to have therapy" would be a sure sign of mental illness... http://www.imaginis.com/breasthealth/statistics.asp
4 :
Often untreated breast cancer ends up eating up to the skin, where the tumors can break through the skin. Typically the first location of spread is to the lymph nodes. From there, it is a pipeline to other major organ systems: liver, brain, etc. Breasts are close to bones and lungs, so the tumor cells can easily migrate there. So lung metastatis and bone mets are common. The breast cancer tumors will grow in the lungs and bones. Tumor cells are small enough to cross the blood/brain barrier, so brain mets are pretty common. Tumors growing in the brain quickly run out of room to grow, so seizures, loss of sight, speech, smell, taste, feeling ... loss of the use of one side of the body, debilitating headaches, vertigo, these are all common symptoms of tumors growing in the brain. Liver mets are very common too. These will manifest with digestive problems, jaundice, pain in the abdomen, etc. Once the liver is involved, other major organs in the area are easy pickins'. You essentially die slowly and painfully as all your organs are consumed by the cancer as it spreads. And you wonder if you lose your hair, get tired, or stressed out?
5 :
you get tired, bony, depressed , and eventually die. There are awful pains and nausea. I do not have breast cancer but ovarian, abdominal, and soon to be more. If you dont do therapy you will not lose your hair and eventual death will be more suddle. I cannot handle intravenous therapy but am taking chemo pills right now plus a very contraversial alkaline water which seems to be helping.
