Is it safe for a girl to be taking birth control pills if her mother had breast cancer

Is it safe for a girl to be taking birth control pills if her mother had breast cancer?
I have a friend who is interested in taking the pill to prevent pregnancy. She is 25 years old and is in very good health. However, her mother had breast cancer when she was 50. Thanks to chemo, her mother has since fully recovered and his now in good health (it was a rather mild case). Will a very low does pill like YAZ or Triphasil be safe for my friend? She'll probably only be using it for a few years.

1 :
All meds including the Pill change the acid/alkaline balance of your body and therefore can set you up for sickness and disease. Nothing the doctors give you is truly safe - just read the side effects(link below). Since she knows the family history she can research all she can do to avoid this cancer from visiting her. All meds are poisons. None have natural healing or restorative effects and most often interfere with the natural balance of the body. She can call the Cancer Society of America (below) and speak with someone on line or in person about the questions related to this and anything else about breast cancer and what she should do or avoid as a lifestyle. Hope this helps.
2 :
Hi. I was on a very low dose birth control pill, and within 2 years of being off it, i developed cancer. I can't say for sure, but i believe with all my heart that it was from taking birth control. Not one person in my family has ever had cancer. I do not smoke or drink, and eat extremely healthy. I should be the last person to ever get cancer. I regret ever taking the pill, and if i had a daughter, i would never let her take it. I don't believe it's safe ( even the lower dose ones ), and it's not worth your life. Synthetic hormones are known to cause cancer, and other health problems. If your friend wants to use them, please make sure to tell her to educate herself first, so she is aware of all the risks.
3 :
High levels of estrogen are known to increase the risk of developing breast cancer because estrogen stimulates the mammary glands/ducts (this is actually why some women experience sore, swollen breasts when they ovulate). If it is in her family history she would already be at an increased risk and most doctors would be wary of prescribing a birth control containing estrogen. The good news is, you can get birth control which doesn't use synthetic estrogen. It is either a progestin-only pill ("minipill") or some other form like the Mirena hormonal IUD (also uses progestin). Progestin can actually decrease the risk of uterine and ovarian cancer (estrogen has an even better decreasing effect on these types of cancer), and doesn't have any known effect on the risk of breast cancer. Progestin-only methods are more likely to cause depression, loss of sex drive, irregular period and spotting/breakthrough bleeding than combined pills. There are a lot of potential side effects associated with hormonal birth control, but most women do OK on it and usually the side effects go away within the first three months. Your friend would be best off talking to an experienced gynecologist and a pharmacist to get more information. They would be able to figure out if her risk of breast cancer is too high to use estrogen or if she is within reasonable range.

What kind of gift to get someone with Breast Cancer

What kind of gift to get someone with Breast Cancer?
My boyfriends mom was just diagnosed with breast cancer, and I don't know what to get her since it's a very hard time. Or should I just get her a card saying sorry?
Cancer - 10 Answers
Random Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
1 :
Get her a small plant and say that you are there to support her in any way possible (if you really are, that is). Don't say sorry, that might make her feel that you feel sorry for her that she has this and may not make it.
2 :
Those with cancer are still the same person they always were. I would give her an uplifting type card. Spiritual wise. She is going to be praying a lot, and your help is a great thing.
3 :
Is she going to have surgery or radiation or chemo? If she is having all or any of those, I'd get her some kind of short fuzzy and warm short robes...short like they come to your waist.....to wear in bed or in where she's having chemo (ladies #1 complaint during chemo is they are cold). When you are ill and in/out of the hospital those come in really handy for people in bed. They come in pretty colors too. I have seen them at Sears among other places.
4 :
u should go to the ellentv.com websiteand send her an e mail with your question and she eill give u some ideas.
5 :
If they are religious donate to her church in her honor, You don't say how ell you know her, but I would think a "Thinking of You" card would be appropriate. If you've ever seen or heard of the Chicken Soup for The Soul books, they are wonderful for times of stress and doubt, you can get them at any book store.
6 :
best gift would be ur empathy ( please look up definition if u don't know )(not the same as sympathy) an encourageing card that lets her know u care would also be welcome.this will let her know that she need not feel alone in this time...also remember that this will be very hard time for ur boyfriend as well ,so try to be understanding of mood swings from both ,as this will also affect you. as someone faces the "unknown" there will alternately be times of hope and times of fear and there will be periods of denial ,times of questioning "why me?',anger, and ultimately acceptance.the greatest gift any of us can give is our sincere and compassionate love and care for our fellow human beings. also remember that this "condition" is NOT the automatic "death sentence" that it was yrs ago ...there have been MANY advances in treatments,surgerys........may GOD bless u for ur willingness to reach out to someone in need.
7 :
Just be there for her and for him. Sometimes, just having someone there is the best medicine.
8 :
No "sorry" card, please! It's not an automatic death sentence, but having cancer is still scary because you just don't know what's going to happen. When I was being treated (surgery, chemo), I was part of a group called "Chemo Angels" (you can find it online) in which a couple of volunteers (my "angels") would send me emails, uplifting cards, small gifts, etc. nearly every week. I thought this was very nice and I loved being remembered frequently during the entire course of my treatment. Also, DON'T avoid her just because you feel bad and aren't sure what to day. The worst part of cancer treatment for me was watching how fast my "friends" disappeared when I needed them most. I know people are afraid of saying the wrong thing, but there's nothing you could say that is worse than just avoiding that person all together. Your friend's mom is still the same person: Give her something you know she'll like, based on what you know about HER, not about the illness she's facing. Oh, I'd also avoid any gifts that are breast-cancer related (stuff with pink bows, etc.). Not everyone likes those because they feel like, "I'm still me, I'm not breast cancer!" Once one has successfully completed treatment, I think it's easier to sort of integrate that experience into one's identity, but during treatment and the stages of grief that may accompany it, it's not so easy, and the person may not want constant reminders of the disease and uncertainty about how treatment will go. Best wishes, M.
9 :
Get her the book "Just Get Me Through This" by Deborah Cohen. It's a guide for going through the process that is breast cancer. It gives information and sensible advice, and is humorous. Also include your card idea, but focus on hoping she'll feel better soon.
10 :
Don't get her anything that has smell to it because they can still become sick from the aromas. No perfume, plants, soaps, lotions, etc. Don't get her sympathy cards, you want to keep her in good spirits. Order her a fruit basket or even give her a stuffed animal. Maybe a favorite DVD.

How many women are in high risk to breast cancer in the US

How many women are in high risk to breast cancer in the US?
Looking for the percentages of women with high risk to have breast cancer.
Cancer - 1 Answers

Those who are at high risk of breast cancer are those who carry one of the rare inherited BRCA genes known to be responsible for hreeditary breast cancer. Only 5 - 10% of all beas cancer cases are hereditary. If a parent carries one of the BRCA genes, each of their children has a 50% chance of inheriting that gene. For a female child, inheriting the gene means a 50 - 80% chance of developing breast cancer over a lifetime of 80+ years. The biggest risk factor for breast cancer is age; 80% of those diagnosed are over 50. One in eight women will develop breast cancer over a lifetime of 80+ years (in the UK this figure is quoted as one in nine). Of those, 5 - 10% will have been at increased risk of breast cancer due to carrying one of the BRCA genes.

Is 12 years old too young to have breast cancer?
I'm 12 and I'm scared i have breast cancer. My grandma has it and now she has it in her lungs too. I'm just scared the genetics will pass on to me and i will get it? Please Help?

Aw, sweetie I'm sorry about your grandmother. Right know since your breasts are not fully developed you probably don't. Still go to the doctors for a regular check up.
2 :
im no doctor but i dont think you can get it at 12 well i am 12 but just to make sure tell a parent or sum 1 you trust or check urself for bumps or go to tha doctors
3 :
the way breast cancer is showing up in women today it might be possible for a 12 year old to have it although it is VERY unlikely but i advise you do a self examination and if you still seriously think you have it(not just because of genetics) then you should see a doctor
4 :
Your grandmother having breast cancer does not increase your risk for it. It is very rarely hereditary and of those that are they are diagnosed under 45 years of age. Self breast exams are not recommended at your age. They are a waste of time and a likely source of unneeded concern due to the changes that occur at your age. 0.1% of all breast cancers occur in women under 30 years-old. It is almost unheard of in a person in their 20s. I work with a lot of doctors at several hospitals and not one has ever seen a teenager with breast cancer.
5 :
Less than 10% of breast cancers are hereditary. If your Grandmother was over 45 when she was diagnosed, then there is probably no increased risk. The older she was at diagnosis, the less risk of it being hereditary. The biggest risk factor is age. It is uncommon in women under 40 and rare in women under 30, almost unheard of in women under 20. You need to familiarize yourself with your breasts, by doing regular self checks while you are young. This will mean you will understand what sort of changes are normal for you, so as you get older you will know what needs to be checked.

Try this self exam. http://www.webmd.com/breast-cancer/guide/breast-self-exam

Eat healthy, don't get fat and pray for luck! Mulatto sounds like a very gullible teenager.. We don't eat cloned animals and gerson??? Please, better hope you never get cancer and decide to try it to cure yourself...
3 :
Look up --->"The Gerson Therapy"<--- hundreds of people have been delivered from Cancer since like the 1800's NATURALLY no medication...no needles...no chemotherapy...but by simply changing their DIET. One thing i know about cancer is that Cancer Cells attack the immune system (breast cancer also)...the F.D.A (Food& Drug Administration) approves all of these uhealthy supplements into our diet and into foods that we eat everyday such as carcinogens, Genetically altered fruits\vegetables, Cloned animals in other words poisinous detrimental foods that cannot possibly be healthy...basically the foods that you eat are most likely the reason you have cancer because of what it consists of that WEAKENS YOUR IMMUNE SYSTEM thus making the immune system unable to fight off the cancer cells... so changing your diet can be the most significant change in your life - to the cancer patient.

We just found out that my 30 year old wife has breast cancer

We just found out that my 30 year old wife has breast cancer?
We just found out that my 30 year old wife has breast cancer (biopsy came back). It̢۪s 1.5cm, and the GP doc said it broke the membrane. If this is stage 1, what are the treatment options? How treatable is this?
Cancer - 11 Answers
Random Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
1 :
It depends on the type of cancer, but treatment starts with surgery, followed with chemotherapy, radiation, or both. The GP should have referred your wife to an oncologist. If not, see that this is done right away. Given your wife's age, it will/should be treated aggressively.
2 :
Treatable. Take your time she's probably had it for several years. Be careful not to be jumped into full scale allopathic treatment by the fear based medical profession! UK- Dr Rosy Daniel - Health Creation US - Hippocrates centre. If your wife goes for a lumpectomy find someone who can do this without removing all armpit lymph nodes. The possible infected lymph node can be picked up with the better treatment options.
3 :
Your only answer will come from the oncologist, radiologist or whichever doctor will be treating her cancer. The good thing is you caught it early before it advanced too far. The ultimate method of treatment will come from the doctor that will be treating her cancer. It could be she can have chemo, radiation, mastectomy or other treatments, but these range from the type of cancer and the stage. I nor anyone here on Y!A will be able to give her a prognosis or decide what her treatment is. I am sorry to hear that she has been diagnosed with this and its a hard pill to swallow. I do wish you luck as she goes through whichever treatment she decides to take.
4 :
Please, I know you are terribly worried and my sympathies out to your wife, but do look up on a reputable website for a prognosis rather than seeking advice on here.,,also why hasn't your GP given you further information. At this stage you need all the help advice and knowledge you can get...and their are few professionals on this site. I do know that if your wife has to lose her breast that the national health will do corrective surgery i.e. in layman's terms a boob job which will give her confidence etc for the future. I do hope everything turns out for the best and as I am not a medical person would not dare to advise you other than what I have said above. Beware of advise on this site though there are some kooks out there. Apologies to all sincere people..but you know the sort I mean. I wish you and you wife a very long health and happy future
5 :
possibly treatable for stage one and stage 2 cancer. maintain a health diet and in addition take an effective supplement for preventing cancer cells like those rich in polyphenols. i know one natural supplement, its 97% polyphenols from pharmanex company. the supplement's name is tegreen97. i suggest your wife try this one becauset here's no harms in trying. it's even featured in newsweek and endorsed by the prostate cancer research institute.you can buy it online and i can assist you. if you want to know more and how add me in your ym id lightandshade0118@yahoo.com or email me on the same address. i'm aileen from philippines. i'm very concerned. please let her try this one.
6 :
Any stage of breast cancer is treatable, and the early stages (1, 2, and even 3) can all be put into long-term remission with proper treatment. This depends entirely on the pathology of the tumor and the exact stage (whether nodes are involved). I'm sorry, it's particularly unfair that a young woman like your wife should have to deal with this. Not that it's fair that any of us do. If you do not have children, and if they recommend chemo, you may want to discuss the possibility of having her eggs harvested for future IVF. Chemo may result in her being unable to have children. Best of luck to you both.
7 :
Hi. To be honest, you sound a bit confused about parts of this. For example, what do you mean by broke the membrane? This isn't breast cancer terminology. If you're saying the tumor margins were not clear, this probably means the cancer may have spread beyond the tumor but not yet reached surrounding lymph nodes. I'm also wondering why a GP doc is interpreting the biopsy for you. In the US, this doesn't happen, so that might be the issue. Other than the general observation that Stage I breast cancers are usually very treatable, no one on here will have the info you seek. If your wife does have bc, at some point she'll see an oncologist and that is who you need to ask.

I was diagnosed with Stage 3B breast cancer on October 26 and I have to disagree with the person that said they will do surgery first. I will tell you my story my tumor is 2 cm not very big at all and I am now just finishing up my chemo because the tumor attached itself to my chest wall and they wanted to see if the chemo would get rid of the little tentacles attaching itself. I will then go thru surgery then 6 weeks radiation. If she is stage 1 it is very treatable!!! :) Even with my Stage 3 my tumor has shrunked by less than half and the treatment options are so advanced. Be very patient while they are figuring out the stage it takes alot to figure it out like size of .tumor, if it has affected the lymphnodes, or if it has spread. Just keep a positive attitude I have been extremely lucky on the sickness part they can manage the side effects very well now. Sometimes there is no radiation especially in Stage 1 they might just remove it and give some chemo. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your wife especially being so young. I am 33 years old and never thought that I would be dealing with cancer at my age. KEEP POSITIVE!!! that makes all the difference in the world. Keep smiling and be there for her.

Breast Cancer Alternative There are many supplements and remedies, if taken regularly and as recommended, that can give you the immune system of a child. Important, is to know them. This list of supplements can increase your chance of being cured of breast cancer considerably. If prostate cancer is becoming a concern for men, women are not in peace with breast cancer, which dries up the source of joy of thousands of women every year, rich and poor. In fact, breast cancer is not new, although its incidence seems increasing. In the 5th century BC, Atossa, the queen of Persia, had fought in vain against her breast cancer. Tears in her eyes, in excruciating pain, surrounded by family and friends, she had to say goodbye to power and wealth to an endless journey. Despite the progress of medical science, the frequency of breast cancer is increasing every day around the world. He is the most common cancer in women. One woman out of twelve will be affected by breast cancer during her lifetime, according to several medical statistics. The disease becomes so popular to the point that a large majority of women are afraid to undergo a mammogram. Women of all classes feel concerned about breast cancer. Billions of dollars are spent in studies, but the causes are still poorly understood, healing is hypothetical. To increase their chance of being cured of breast cancer, some victims turn to alternative treatments. Either alone or along with the conventional treatment (chemotherapy, radiotherapy, hormonotherapy, surgery, etc.) every day more and more women use natural medicine to fight breast cancer. If you are one of them, this article will be an additional weapon in your war against breast cancer. Is there an alternative way to eradicate breast cancer besides chemotherapy and radiotherapy? Immunotherapy - is a type of therapy consists of stimulating the normal defenses (immune reactions) of the body to fight or protect the body against pathogenic attack, including the development of cancer cells. Immunotherapy is not new as many may think; however, in the past, physicians believed that the immune system fought only against bacterial and viral attacks. About 100 years ago, Dr. William Coley has demonstrated that it can cure or control the proliferation of cancer cells by injecting vaccine that strengthens the immune system. However, the theory was not so appreciated by the medical elite. After years of studies, researchers have found that the immune system plays an essential role in protecting the body against cancer. Studies have also shown that patients who have a strong immune system not only more likely to be cured from breast cancer but also to reverse the effects of chemotherapy and radiation. That is, your chance to be healed depending largely on the health of our immune system. How can you boost your immune system naturally? There are many supplements, If taken regularly and as recommended, that can give you the immune system of a child. Some of them include: Lignans - Lignans are non steroidal compounds of the family of phytoestrogens (also known as dietary estrogens) found in large quantities in fruits and vegetables, soy, flaxseed and grains. They have preventive and curative effects on breast cancer, according to new studies conducted by a group of French and German doctors in premenopausal women with breast cancer and healthy premenopausal women. It seems that lignans affect the breast tissue by blocking the synthesis and movement of female hormones, preventing tumor development. The medical elite do not confirm these studies yet; if you are a cancer victim, however, you can increase your lignans intake. Ellagic acid - ellagic acid is a polyphenol antioxidant present in many fruits and vegetables such as raspberries, strawberries, cranberries, walnuts, pecans, grenades, etc. Researchers have found that Ellagic acid may inhibit or slow the development of cancer cells. It is also suggested that ellagic acid can help reduce heart disease, liver problems, and birth defects. However, to get satisfying results, this supplement must be taken with a diet rich in fruits and cruciferous vegetables. Astragalus - Astragalus propinquus (or simply Astragalus) has been used in herbal medicine for centuries to strengthen the body against diseases including but limited to colds, upper respiratory infections, heart disease, lower blood pressure, diabetes, liver problems, and many types of cancer. Astragalus has been shown in medical studies to have antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, antioxidants, antiviral and diuretic properties. Using it regularly as recommended, Astragalus can not only prevent or eradicate cancer cells, but also a wide range of other ailments. Graviola - also known as sour, Brazilian Paw Paw, Guanbana, Graviola boosts the immune system, reverses some chemotherapy side effects, and enhances the effectiveness of other cancer remedies. Does wearing your bra to bed increase your chances of getting breast cancer

Does wearing your bra to bed increase your chances of getting breast cancer?
I've heard from people sleeping in your bra can cause breast cancer. Is this true?
Cancer - 9 Answers
Random Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
1 :
no.. bras have nothing to do with nothing
2 :
ummm no it's not true
3 :
no it's all a hoax....breast cancer is hereditary...
4 :
Actually by wearing bra you can cause blood clots in your breast causing permanent breast damage, killing the cells and worse cause it to decompose. In medical terms this is call Bra Induce decomposition syndrome (BIDS)
5 :
Of course not. Why would anyone want to sleep wearing a bra anyway?
6 :
No, that's ridiculous. It doesn't give you cancer, or make your breasts smaller. Myth.
7 :
No, it's nonsense. There are a number of stories circulating about bras and breast cancer - and they are all untrue. You can't get or increase your risk of breast cancer by sleeping in a bra; or by wearing a tight bra, wearing a wired bra, wearing a bra 24/7, not wearing a bra or any of the other nonsense you might hear. Breast cancer, like other cancers, happens when normal cells change so that they behave in an uncontrolled way; your underwear cannot trigger this process or have any effect on it. Have a look at any reputablle breast cancer charity or information site; you won't find bras listed among the risk factors on any of them Do what's comfortable for you
8 :
Wearing bras to bed could cause breast cysts, pain, and cancer. It has to do with the constrictive nature of bras. Compression and constriction of the breast tissue by bras prevents the lymphatic system from cleansing the breast tissue of toxins.
9 :
There is no documented proof of the relationship between bra wearing and breast cancer except that breast cancer rates are highest in countries where bra wearing rates are highest. Logic tells us that wearing tight clothing will reduce blood and lymph flow thru our breasts and thereby decrease health potential. Anyway, why would someone want to wear one to bed? They are supposed to hold your breasts up but don't work at all when horizontal!

Is it true having kids before 30 lowers risk of breast cancer

Is it true having kids before 30 lowers risk of breast cancer?
I have breast cyst, have had a biopsy, however, my breast specialist indicated that my chances of having breast cancer develop would lower if I had a child before the age of 30? I was not ready to start planning to be a mom. Sure I am married, but have a few years to go for school. Has anyone else heard a similar story. p.s. it is the act of breast feeding that changes the breast development, thus avoiding cancer slightly.

That's what they say, but who knows really...they also say if you don't have kids you can develop Ovarian Cancer as well...I have breast cancer, and I am 43. I don't have any children...maybe they are right.
2 :
The short answer is yes. HOWEVER, risks are probabilities, you may still get breast cancer if you have a child now, or conversely you may not get breast cancer even if you have a child after 30. Furthermore there are other risk factors for breast cancer. [family history, age at menarche, certain prior breast pathologies, breastfeeding, hormone use, menopause age.] One needs to put into context the background risk compared to the excess risk that the factor in question adds to the background risk. [unfortunately i haven't got the figures at hand right now.] The best thing is to speak to your doctor.
3 :
It's true that having children later in life or not having them at all is a breast cancer risk factor; and having children before the age of 30 and breastfeeding both offer a degree of protection against breast cancer. But it's just a risk factor not a cause, and most women who don't have children or who have their first later than 30 don't get breast cancer. A risk factor is simply something that may increase your risk, it isn't a cause. Insurance companies regard 'being male' as a risk factor for having a car crash, but being male doesn't actually cause car crashes. I really don't think you should let worry about something that may never happen change your plans, or stop you starting a family later in life if that's what you want to do.
4 :
I saw a genetics councilor who also told me that having children when your young can lower the risk of breast cancer. I saw the genetics councilor as my mum developed breast cancer at 36, but she had me at 17 and my sister at 20, she's never smoked, has a very healthy diet & is not overweight, she has never been on the contraceptive pill (some say this increases a risk), she has no family history of breast cancer and the tests they did showed it wasn't hormonal. The doctors could never explain why my mum developed breast cancer. I have 2 children that i had at 19 & 21, but i honestly dont believe the theory. I am at a moderate risk of developing breast cancer as my mum developed a very vicious cancer at such a young age. Carry on with your education, dont rush into having children, plan your family when your ready, doctors aren't always right, im sure if every woman had children before 30 and breast fed their babies, there would still be the same breast cancer diagnosis's as there are now.

How can you get breast cancer

How can you get breast cancer?
I'm no doctor or genius with this stuff. I just wanted to know what are some things that women do that can develop breast cancer in them? Do they get it out of the blue by not taking care of themselves (if so, in what ways?) and it just sort of happens, or is there something all women can do to prevent getting it in the 1st place? My overall question is just...how do you get it?

Birth control pills can contribute to breast cancer.
2 :
here are a few suggestions: store your cell phone in your bra eat a lot of bad food, including burnt food use bleach a lot on your region put pesticide (small amount) on your region inject immune suppressants into your region i hope this helps in your goal!
3 :
Well you have a bigger chance of getting it if someone in your family had Cancer (mother, father, grandmother). Eating healthy, and exercise helps prevent all kinds of Cancer's (and overall keep you more healthy), I think that's the best you can do. Also, it's important to get tested on time (after a certain age every few months go for a checkup) when you catch it fast the chance of recovery is very very high.
4 :
I think no one knows exactly what causes it, you can be very careful with your life and still get it. some people think antiperspirant deodorant is a cause
5 :
Most of the risk factors for breast cancer are not about choices. For example, being an Ashkenazi Jew puts you at higher risk due to a inherited gene mutation. In fact, genetics, either at the basic level or due to the type of breasts you have accounts for much of it. Barring that, yes, prolonged estrogen use (certain types of birth control) raises your risk, not having or breastfeeding children or having them after 30 also raises the risk. So does hormone replacement therapy after menopause. Unlike some other types of cancer, which do pop up out of the blue seemingly, breast cancer has a very well understood list of risk factors. Just as a trivia point, men also get breast cancer, believe it or not.
6 :
Nobody knows exactly what causes breast cancer, but we do know that certain risk factors are linked to the disease. A risk factor is anything that affects a person's chance of getting a disease such as cancer. Different cancers have different risk factors. Some risk factors, such as smoking, drinking, and diet are linked to things a person does. Others, like a person's age, race, or family history, can't be changed. But having a risk factor, or even many, doesn̢۪t mean that a person will get the disease. Although many risk factors may increase your chance of developing breast cancer, it is not yet known exactly how some of these risk factors cause cells to become cancerous. Hormones seem to play a role in many cases of breast cancer, but just how this happens is not fully understood. Some women who have one or more risk factors never get breast cancer. And most women who do get breast cancer don̢۪t have any risk factors. While all women are at risk for breast cancer, the factors listed below can increase a woman̢۪s chances of having the disease. The chance of getting breast cancer goes up as a woman gets older. About 2 out of 3 women with invasive breast cancer are age 55 or older when the cancer is found. Breast cancer risk is higher among women whose close blood relatives have this disease. The relatives can be from either the mother̢۪s or father̢۪s side of the family. Having a mother, sister, or daughter with breast cancer about doubles a woman̢۪s risk. (It's important to note that 70% to 80% of women who get breast cancer do not have a family history of this disease.) Women who began having periods early (before age 12) or who went through the change of life (menopause) after the age of 55 have a slightly increased risk of breast cancer. I hope it help. good luck
7 :
Cancer happens when normal cells change so that they grow in an uncontrolled way. This uncontrolled growth causes a tumour to form. Nobody knows what causes this to happen. Cancer specialists don't know, so nobody here will. It is most certainly not caused by not taking care of yourself. No particular diet or food has been shown to cause, prevent, treat or cure it. I once thought my healthy organic vegan diet would protect me against breast cancer, but it didn't. While nobody knows the cause, there are recognised risk factors for breast cancer, some preventable, some out of your control. Getting older is the biggest risk factor - 80% of those diagnosed with it are over 50. The other risk factors are: Genetic – but only 5-10% of breast cancers are genetic/hereditary Having children at an older age or not at all. The more children a woman has may also slightly lower her risk. Breast-feeding helps protect against the disease. The longer a woman breastfeeds her children, the more she lowers her risk. Starting periods at a younger than average age (under 12) or having a late menopause (after 55) . Taking the contraceptive pill or hormone replacement therapy (HRT) causes a small increase in risk. However, the risk gradually returns to normal after you stop taking them. Being overweight (especially after the menopause). Regularly drinking more than 1 unit of alcohol per day slightly increases the risk of breast cancer. Having a previous diagnosis of breast cancer increases the risk of developing a new cancer in the other breast. Remember these are only risk factors - someone may tick all of these boxes, and never get cancer, and someone with none of them may still get breast cancer. Many people, invariably those who have not had or studied cancer, have a pet theory about what causes cancer. You already have answers putting it down to diet and nonsense like cell phones, deodorants, bleach etc. That's because it's easier for people who haven't had cancer to 'blame the victim' - to put an individual's cancer down to their lifestyle - rather than accept that it is a random, and still mysterious, disease that can strike any of us at any time

Breast cancers in their early stages are usually painless. Often the first symptom is the discovery of a hard lump. Fifty percent of such masses are found in the upper outer quarter of the breast. The lump may make the affected breast appear elevated or asymmetric. The nipple may be retracted or scaly. Sometimes the skin of the breast is dimpled like the skin of an orange. In some cases there is a bloody or clear discharge from the nipple. Many cancers, however, produce no symptoms and cannot be felt on examination. They can be detected only with a mammogram.

What will you do to promote World Breast Cancer Awareness Day?
My wife Marjory has just finished a horrible two years of treatment for breast cancer. She's blogged the story on http://www.twinkletwinkles.com so that others can benefit from her experience. Tomorrow is World Breast Cancer Awareness Day - what will you do to promote it?

I'm not doing anything about it more than usual. I think most women are already aware that breast cancer exists. It's not something I want to dwell on, or to be afraid of because I think that fearing something like that can actually help in bringing it into a person's life. When I see information on how to prevent it -- not using deodorant that contains aluminum, for instance, considering how many women have breast tumors that are precisely in that outer area there near the where the aluminum concentrates from the deodorant under the arms -- and other information, I read it and I pass it on. I'm very sorry for your wife's struggles with it, and happy for her that she is finished with her treatment - I hope it was successful and that she lives to be 120! And I pray I never get it, myself. Or anyone I know.

No it's nonsense. Most of these rumours originate from hoax emails. Breast cancer, like other cancers, happens when normal cells change so that they behave in an uncontrolled way; your underwear cannot trigger this process or have any effect on it - and that applies no matter how tight the bra, or how long it's worn for, or whether it's wired or not, whether you're sleep or awake, or any of the other silly myths that teenage girls frighten each other with. Here's what the American Cancer Society says; scroll down to 'Uncertain or unproven risk factors', where it 'there is no evidence to support the idea that bras cause breast cancer', rightly ascribes this nonsense to 'internet email rumours'. http://www.cancer.org/Cancer/BreastCancer/OverviewGuide/breast-cancer-overview-what-causes

Describe the pysiology of breast cancer and what factors can affect its development?
Basically my nan has breast cancer and I haven't got a clue. All i really wanna know is what the causes could be or are, how its stops the body from working normally and what makes it worse? Please help :(

1 :
Sorry to hear your nan has breast cancer. Nobody know what causes breast cancer; there are risk factors, some avoidable and some not, but they ARE just risk factors and ticking one or all boxes doesn't mean someone will necessarily get breast cancer. Apart from being female and getting older (80% of people diagnosed are over 50), which are the two greatest risks, the possible risk factors are: Genetic; but only 5-10% of breast cancer cases are due to hereditary factors. Having children at an older age or not at all. The more children a woman has may also slightly lower her risk. Breast-feeding helps protect against the disease. The longer a woman breast feeds her children, the more she lowers her risk. Starting periods at a younger than average age (under 12) or having a late menopause (after 55) Taking the contraceptive pill or hormone replacement therapy (HRT) causes a small increase in risk. As for what makes it worse, the only thing I can think of is not getting it treated asap My best wishes to your nan for her treatment

Do i have a great risk of getting breast cancer

Do i have a great risk of getting breast cancer?
My aunt was diagnosed with breast cancer when she was in her early teens? The last april my grandmother was diagnosed as well. She has has surgery and chemo treatments. Then last june my mother was diagnosed with breast cancer. They are all on my mothers side of the family. My three aunt's on my fathers side has had breast cancer but they are not of very close relation. Am I at a high risk for breast cancer? And what steps should I take?

yeah, be sure to get mamographs... check urself for bumps if u find something unusual go to the doctor and let them scan u
2 :
Everything else being equal, you are at a higher risk than someone with no family history of breast cancer, but you are not a high risk. You should start getting mammograms when you are 10 years younger than your mother age at diagnosis. It is almost unheard of to get breast cancer in your early teens, so I̢۪m not sure what is going on there. This is a medical journal type case. How is it that aunts on your dad̢۪s side are not as close a relation as an aunt on your mother̢۪s side?
3 :
Yeah you do have a great risk! I am like you but worse, my grandmother had it but survived, my mother got it but she died 2 years ago :( We have to go and get check ups regularly. I had a scare when i was 19, i had a hard large lump in my breast and i got a biopsy but it was ok, it was benign. Good-luck, keep up your check ups!
4 :
Yes. In find from what you have stated that Cancer has run into your family from Maternal and Paternal sides. A family history of breast cancer. If you have a mother, sister or daughter with breast cancer, you have a greater chance of being diagnosed with breast cancer. Still, the majority of people diagnosed with breast cancer have no family history of the disease. So it is very essential you should be careful and have periodical checkups to ensure that you are free from Breast cancer or even if detected in early stages it will be easier to treat it sucessfully. You can have BRCA gene tests. Inherited genes that increase cancer risk. Certain gene mutations that increase the risk of breast cancer can be passed from parents to children. The most common gene mutations are referred to as BRCA1 and BRCA2. These genes can greatly increase your risk of breast cancer and other cancers, but they don't make cancer inevitable. The BRCA gene test is a blood test that uses DNA analysis to identify changes (mutations) in either one of two breast cancer susceptibility genes — known as BRCA1 or BRCA2. Genetic counseling also is part of the BRCA gene test process. After having a BRCA gene test performed, you learn whether you carry an inherited BRCA gene mutation and receive an estimate of your personal risk of breast cancer and ovarian cancer. Alternately a mammogram, once in a year need to be done. A mammogram is an X-ray of the breast. Mammograms are commonly used to screen for breast cancer. If an abnormality is detected on a screening mammogram, your doctor may recommend a diagnostic mammogram to further evaluate that abnormality. However I request you not to worry much and be careful and get the tests done to detect the deisease when occures. Best of luck -
5 :
95% of women have a 1 in 8 risk. 4% have a 1 in 4 risk. 1% have a 1 in 2 risk. Given your family history, there is a high chance you have a genetic predisposition, putting you in the 4% having a 1 in 4 risk. Be vigilant. Discuss a screening /monitoring plan with your Dr, and remember that still leaves you with a 3 in 4 chance of never having breast cancer.
6 :
You could be. The best thing you can do is to have regular checkups and mammograms. That way, if you ever have anything suspicious going on, it will be caught at an early time and you will not have to worry about anything. So please just have regular checkups nd talk to yur doctor about your family that has had cancer.
7 :
I think you do. I've seen answers in this section which claim cancer is not heriditary unless you have BRAC (whatever it is gene). But I agree with the people who say it is. My father's sister had breast cancer and my mother's sister had breast cancer. I have breast cancer. I don't know how old you are, but I would start getting mammograms as soon as possible. Talk to your doctor about your concerns.

What is the best way to prevent breast cancer

What is the best way to prevent breast cancer?
(1 in 8 US women will have breast cancer; 1 in 24 Philippine women. Is it what they do eat - or what they don't eat ... or .... ?)
Women's Health - 4 Answers
Random Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
1 :
Prevention of breast cancer in high-risk women is probably more important than treatment of breast cancer. Many women who may have inherited genetic mutations in breast cancer related genes (called BRCA1 and BRCA2) might have very high risk of developing breast cancer. In these women and other women who have very strong family history of breast cancer, the chance of developing breast cancer may be decreased by hormonal treatment [citation needed]. Classic drug for breast cancer prevention is tamoxifen, which is currently used extensively in high risk women. A recent clinical trial has shown that Raloxifene, which is drug commonly used for prevention of osteoporosis is as good as tamoxifen in breast cancer prevention with much less side effects .Raloxifene is not currently Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved for breast cancer prevention.
2 :
Eat your greens, don't smoke, avoid blows to your breasts.
3 :
One clue to decreasing the risk of breast cancer is using virgin coconut oil for food. The Philippine women who move to the USA or to urban centers in the Philippines show as high of rates of breast cancer as American women - ruling out a genetic factor. But it is not possible at present to say if there is something in industrialized foods that actually causes increased incidence of breast cancer. Raloxifene actually causes a relatively minor reduction in breast cancer incidence, and though it was touted to have less side effects than Tamoxifene, these were not statistically significant - making it a profit-oriented hype campaign from the pharmaceutical industry much more than a serious medical breakthrough supported by legitimate scientific research. The FDA approved it because it's true, that it is therapeutically effective - but the risk-benefit advantage is not at all obvious.
4 :
I JSUT SAW THIS ON ANOTHER QUESTION: No, swallowing doesn't increase your protein level. It does however reduce the risk of breast cancer! This is a fact: The Univ. of North Carolina conducted a study and concluded that women who swallowed 2-3 times a week reduced their chance of having breast cancer than women that don't swallow. So no, it doesn't do anything for protein, but it does reduce your chance of getting breast cancer. THEY ARE TALKING ABOUT SEMEN, CUM, SPERM

Yes it is possible, but very rarely happens. I think little78lucky is confused, as this topic has nothing to do with cancer spreading.

Yes. It is possible to have more than one type of cancer at the same time.

How do you deal with breast cancer

How do you deal with breast cancer?
My step mom has breast cancer and is having a hard time now that she had surgery and got both breast off

I understand her feelings exactly because my wife lost a breast to cancer too. I have seen her with tears in her eyes as she runs her finger along her scar tissue. But she is more than her breast and my wife is considering reconstruction. What really matters is how much confidence she has in her team of doctors and how much further she has to go towards her final treatment. Once she gets the drains removed and she may or may not need radiation or chemotherapy. Confidence comes in the fact that people that have this done live sometimes with no evidence of cancer in her body for a long time. You or anyone fighting cancer deals with it in living one day at a time, one step in front of the other in doing what needs to be done to get life back to as much as normal as possible. What will be critical in her return to health is to exercise and stretch those areas the arms and shoulders. My wife is in the "ACTIVE" program where a physical therapist teacher her how to stretch and get her endurance up using a treadmill. A doctor than looks at her daily records and measurements are taken to see how much flexibility she has in movements of her arms and shoulders. That is one thing that will now be constant in your step mom's life. Exercising to maintain movement to stay flexible. Her doctor says that my wife has great motion because of her program. He said he had seen patients that have lost 75% of their ability of movement because they do not stretch. She will recover and gain confidence but it is a slow process. I told my wife that reconstruction is her individual decision. There is pain involved and right now she had been through enough. I would recommend web sites that actually have members that she could correspond with to talk about her cancer and double mastectomy. What has helped me is to read as much books about breast cancer and cancer in general to become informed and equipped to be able to address issues that may arise in our life's because of cancer. Knowledge is power and freedom, arm yourselves because the enemy is scary and thrives on fear. Slay the beast with the power of humor, friends, and using the weapons of exercise and nutrition. Peace to you and your step mom, she has a good partner in you and that value is priceless.
2 :
That's tough. I only lost one breast and it was quite a battle with trying to work and keep my health insurance and undergo two surgeries, 4 months of chemo and 3 months of radiation. But you take it one day at a time - literally. Don't worry about tomorrow. Get thru today. Exercise - yoga. Go swimming. I have not had reconstructive surgery and Macy's makes great padded bathing suits for breast cancer survivors. Make sure she puts make-up on and goes out to dinner or theater at least bi-weekly. Let her know you are there. I am 5 years out and doing well. Take care and good luck.
3 :
Tracey, in what ways is she having a hard time? Physically? Emotionally?

Cake designs for Breast Cancer Awareness

Cake designs for Breast Cancer Awareness?
I am going to be baking some cakes for a Breast Cancer Awareness Event next month to put in a cake/cupcake walk. I already know what I'm going to do for most of them, but I wanted to do at least one Pink Ribbon themed cake and one bunch of cupcakes. Does anyone have any ideas, tips or websites I could go to to check out ideas? Thank you for any answers, it will be very much appreciated.

Since you're doing a bunch of cupcakes you should keep it simple. Ice them in white buttercream and then pipe a pink ribbon on them with a #104 decorating tip. You could do the same for the cake and just add a pink border to match.
2 :
arrange the cupcakes in a ribbon it will take a few dozen but it would be nice........of course a sheet cake with a ribbon piped on it (i'm not being funny but would cupcakes be appropriate?)
3 :
Okay, the cupcakes can be positioned like the pink ribbon thingy and frosted all pink. Done. You can do two round cakes together on a sheet and decorate like a bustier or a bikini top if you want, it would get a laugh if tastefully done. Do a cake with a "sailor arm" that has the stereotypical "MOM" tatoo on it. Then write something to the effect of, Do it for Mom, support breast cancer research. The sailor arm could have a pink ribbon in the hand or something. Do an old fashioned style cake with the trellis and rose design, maybe with a pretty white rocker on it with a kitten on the rocker. Say something like "Help her stay around to smell the roses."
4 :
https://www.kitchenkrafts.com/product.asp?pn=WP1017&c2p=hp&bhcd2=1189132555 This is the web address for a pan to do the Pink Ribbon cake in. You can also use it for other "ribbon" reminders by changing the colors. Thanks for doing what you are doing!!!!
