Why is breast cancer the only type of cancer that gets it's own specific ribbon color

Why is breast cancer the only type of cancer that gets it's own specific ribbon color?
With all the different types of cancer it seems breast cancer gets the most press and the most funding for research. I like breasts as much as the next man, but I had testicular cancer, my dad nearly died of colon cancer, and my uncle Ed and friend John did die from lung cancer. Trust me ladies I sympathize, but our testicles and lungs are just as important as your breasts, and if I'm going to donate to save breasts I at least want to see nipples on basic cable.

Many cancers have their own ribbon colour. Dark Blue Ribbons: Colon Cancers Gold Ribbons: Childhood Cancer Gray Ribbons: Diabetes & Brain Cancer Green Ribbons: Kidney Cancer Green/Blue Ribbons: Mental Heath Awareness Jade Ribbons: Liver Cancer & Hepatitis Jigsaw Puzzle Ribbons: Autism Lace Ribbons: Osteoporosis Lime Green Ribbons: Lymphoma, Lyme Disease Orange Ribbons: Leukemia, Multiple Sclerosis Periwinkle Ribbons: Hypertension & Stomach Cancer Pearl Ribbons: Lung Cancer Pink Ribbons: Breast Cancer Pink, Purple & Teal: Thyroid Cancer Purple Ribbons: Testicular Cancer, Pancreatic Cancer, Eating Disorders Red Ribbons:AIDS/HIV, Heart Disease Silver Ribbons: Parkinson's Disease Sky Blue Ribbons: Prostate Cancer Teal Ribbons: Ovarian Cancer Yellow: Bladder Cancer White Ribbons: Bone Cancer The amount of publicity they receive is dependant on the effort people are willing to put in to promote them . Breast cancer survivors and family and friends of those diagnosed have been working HARD to promote breast cancer awareness for about 25 years. Until recently, most people would only talk about other cancers in whispers. Add: I find it telling that having had testicular cancer uyou are not aware of the purple ribbon, hopefully you will start wearing one and tell people why, this is how awareness starts

Its all about raking in the $$$. They do not and have never cared about us as human living souls. Oh, and they DO KNOW WHAT CAUSES CANCER. They have known the answer to this for years. Same goes for diabetes etc. I simply refuse to buy into their lies and deceits. Remember it is ONLY ABOUT THE $$$.
4 :
It's probably for publicity, and it also helps rake in the $$$. Do you know how much money people make by just making pink versions of something and slapping on a little pink ribbon? Sure, they do donate some money to susan g. komen foundation but they still make money. Like someone mentioned above, many cancers have their own ribbon, but for some reason the pink ribbon gets most attention. I think it's wrong to put breast cancer as the most important type to cure, when there are much more fatal cancers that lack sufficient research.

What are good Breast Cancer organizations that my club can donate money to

What are good Breast Cancer organizations that my club can donate money to? ?
My school's key club is going to raise money to donate to breast cancer research, but I'm not sure what the best organization would be to send the money. We want it to be in Illinois. please help!

Susan B Kohmen, they are nationwide.

Although October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, why limit your donations to Breast Cancer Research? The American Cancer Society is a worthy cause too and will graciously accept your donations. I am a breast cancer survivor.
3 :
It is nice to donate to a local research organization, so why not ask at the Town Hall, Library, Church etc. for local approved charities - and choose one of those? As a previous answer pointed out, there are other 199 other cancers, just as worthy as breast cancer, but it gets the majority of funding - so give someone else a chance! And I am a breast cancer survivor - wrote www.after-cancer.com and still feel that others should have a chance! Good luck and thanks for your kind efforts on behalf of all of us. Verite R

How much does your risk of breast cancer increase after you turn 30

How much does your risk of breast cancer increase after you turn 30?
How much does your risk of breast cancer increase after you turn 30? I'm just curious... if a woman is that age, what are the odds of developing breast cancer at age 30, or within the next few years?
Cancer - 2 Answers
Random Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
1 :
The likelihood of developing all types of cancer increase as we age. While the risk of breast cancer is low at age 30, it is not zero. By age 40, the risk of developing breast cancer in any given year is close to 1%. Regular self-examinations and annual mammograms are your best defense against this illness. Early detection generally leads to very favorable long term outcomes, while late detection poses significant challenges. During a person's entire lifetime, men have a 1 in 2 chance of developing some form of cancer and women have a 1 in 3 chance. Cancer is particularly common in senior citizens.
2 :
At 30 it is about 1 in every 11,000 women. Women under 20 the risk is 1.3 in every 1 million. Clearly there is a significant increase in this amount of time. However, 1 in every 11,000 is not a high risk. This is why screening is recommended starting at age 40, as this is considered very young for breast cancer. The women most at risk are postmenopausal. Of course that occurs at a different age for every woman. At 55 it is 1 in every 33 women. At 75 it is 1 in every 11. At 80 it is 1 in every 8 and this is when it levels off.

It really depends on the person and what stage she has. My mother had breast cancer when I was a teenager. She had to have a mastectomy. That means they removed the breast. Everyone was worried, but she actually handled it pretty well. I've heard that some women get very depressed. Hormones can be a big issue and it is very painful. My mom lived through it and has been in remission for 31 years. I also have a friend now that found a lump in her thigh. Within only a few weeks it became the size of a softball. She had emergency surgery and it turned out to be a very aggressive cancer. She had to have chemo for over a year. She lost her hair, had very little energy and got physically sick often. We have common friends and we all get together to spend time with her. We take her out when she feels like going. We stay home and cook dinner like a small party and just hang out with her. There have been many times she was too sick to go home, so we fluffed up some pillows on the sofa, let her rest and covered her with blankets to make her comfortable... then we all talked about silly things to make her laugh and take her mind off the pain. We offer her to spend the night so she won't be alone. She has gorgeous hair, but when she lost it, we all showed up at her house to BBQ for her and clean house for her. We all wore flesh colored swim caps so that we wouldn't appear to have hair either. She laughed until she cried. It's hard to know what to say or do... but just be a good friend to her. Be there for her, listen to her. With her mom being so sick, she will have moments where she might cry, she might be stressed or scared... and she might be very strong. Maybe you can offer to go with her to the hospital when they go... to be there for support. Let her vent if she needs to. Let her cry if she needs to. Just hug her and be supportive. Bring her mother flowers, offer to help both of them around the house. You can be useful in a time when the whole family is struggling. Anything to pick up the slack when their concentration is elsewhere. Be kind and sensitive. Listen to your heart and good sense. God bless you! I'll keep you all in my prayers.

A person with breast cancer is just like anyone else. She will probably have a surgery and then maybe have chemotherapy (treatment with powerful intravenous drugs to kill the cancer) and radiation treatment (powerful radiation like X-rays that also kill cancer cells). She probably won't spend much time in the hospital. I had my surgery and went home the same day. Some days she will feel fine, other days she will be tired or feel sick from treatment or will be recovering from surgery. If she has chemotherapy, she will probably lose her hair (it does grow back). I was diagnosed 6 months ago. I go out with friends, walk my dog and have continued working part time.Your friend's mom will probably keep doing a lot of the things she normally does, just at a slower pace till she feels better. And treatment keeps you very busy too. Be supportive of her and your friend. A nice thing to do is cook a meal for the family once in awhile, especially something they can freeze. When you are treatment, you sometimes don't feel well, don't feel like cooking an it helps just to have something easy that you can heat up. A lot of people drove me to treatment and cooked for me and my husband. That was a lot of help.
3 :
My wife went through breast cancer treatment and it is difficult at best. Lots of times she will be pretty fatigued if she will be going through chemotherapy or radiation treatments. It is kind of you to be concerned if I were a guy that I had a friend who's mom was going through treatment and wanted to help I would volunteer to do things for your friend and mom. It could be as simple as doing some house chores or yard work. What happens is that their mom is so tired that she cannot do much around the house. Her main job now is to survive cancer period. So I would ask if there would be anything they need. It could be as simple as driving them to the appointments or mowing the grass, or doing the windows. You are a good friend, but usually it would need to be a good relationship with the mother for the offer to be considered because it is such a private disease. Your friend will be under a lot of pressure to step up and take on more responsibility around the house. Anything to relive that would likely be a blessing. Angels come in many forms to help, and you are one.

My daughter has a lump on her breast and I was wandering is she too young for breast cancer

My daughter has a lump on her breast and I was wandering is she too young for breast cancer?
She is only 10 and Friday we go for an ultra sound to see what it is. The lump has been there for about a month and the doctor didnt really go into detail about anything until she gets the results from the test. Have you known anyone that young to have breast cancer or am I worring too much?

if she's been through puberty (10 seems far too young but it happens), it could be breast cancer, otherwise the tissue there has yet to develop into what could host breast cancer. Its Extremely unlikely, however these things do happen. Don't freak yourself out until it becomes serious, I doubt it will. You're a good mom
2 :
Nobody that young has ever had breast cancer, I think 25 was the youngest ever. Doctors were actually shocked about a woman THAT young getting it. Most likely it will be a harmless cyst that may go away on it's own. Please try not to worry too much.
3 :
Your daughters age does not matter. There is no such thing as too young to have a condition but it is less likely. You will have to wait until the results are in. Jumping to conclusions is never a good idea. Most breast lumps are benign so it is in her favor. Good luck!
4 :
Most likely it is and infected cyst. Breast cancer, although extremely rare-1 to 100,000,000, really, can be found at young ages. Diseases and cancers seem to affecting younger and younger each generation. Relax for now, because children and teen girls often develop cysts which are often harmless and, if infected, will be drained and everything will go back to normal. Don't expect the worst, but prepare for it.
5 :
Unfortunately no age is too young, but her age does make it A LOT less likely.
6 :
Highly unlikely that this would be breast cancer. Stop worryingbecause this is only adding extra stress to you and your daughter. If the Dr was concerned that it might be cancer he would have arranged for an urgent ultrasound TODAY!
7 :
Highly unlikeable! There are several diagnoses she may have. The first being a fluid filled sac in the breast that they can drain and the second is that of a solid mass made of tissue called a fibroadenoma. Having been in nursing for quite sometime, it has been my experience that when a physician has a concern for a cancer diagnosis test like x-rays and ultrasounds can be ordered the next day. As a mother I know it is difficult not to worry but take a deep breath exhale and tell yourself everything is ok I would like to hear follow up after the ultrasound.
8 :
I have never heard of any female that young with breast cancer. It does not mean it won't happen but I doubt it, and I have had cervical cancer.

Why does breast cancer get twice as much government funding then any other cancer

Why does breast cancer get twice as much government funding then any other cancer?
-they get twice as much funding from the government in addition to the public contributions -men die at the same rate from prostate cancer as women do from breast cancer -if detected, women can have their breast removed and replaced with plastic surgery...men dont have that option -brain cancer affects all genders, ages, religions,...not just a single age/gender.

They have better marketing.

And you know how much the gov't funds the research how and which part of the gov't? I mean it's true, but there are many branches of funding, plus many private and nonprofit grants awarded also.. My cancer doesn't even make the top 10 most funded through nci website. Estimated new cases and deaths from prostate cancer in the United States in 2010: New cases: 217,730 Deaths: 32,050 Estimated new cases and deaths from breast cancer in the United States in 2010: New cases: 207,090 (female); 1,970 (male) Deaths: 39,840 (female); 390 (male) Estimated new cases and deaths from brain and other nervous system cancers in the United States in 2010: New cases: 22,020 Deaths: 13,140
3 :
Where do you get your information from? Men DO NOT die from prostate cancer at the same rate. The risk of death from prostate cancer is 1 in 34. The risk of death for breast cancer is I in 28. Men often have their prostates removed and they donĂ¢€™t need plastic surgery. Breast cancer affects all genders, different ages, religions,...not just a single age/gender. So what is your point? There are 17,000 cases of brain cancer every year. There are 295,000 cases of breast cancer.
4 :
I just want to address one point in your question. I had breast cancer; I am still in treatment for the type of cancer I have. I had a bilateral mastectomy in July of 2009. Having a breast removed and replaced is not as simple as many seem to think it is. It is nowhere near the same as having a "boob job". Some patients can have the surgery at the same time; many cannot. "Replacement" requires more than one surgical procedure. There are several avenues to choose from when it comes to reconstruction; and they each have inherent risks. Some forms of reconstruction require that tissue be taken from other parts of the body to build up the chest wall after mastectomy and then have expanders inserted. Expanders require regular trips to the plastic surgeon for infusions of saline to slowly, not always gently, expand the skin. Then another procedure is required to insert the implants. Surgeries and recoveries could take as long as a year; and are not always successful. I recommend that you use your search engine and look for images of reconstructed breasts. They look nothing like the real thing and can come at quite an emotional cost. Every woman is different and every cancer is different.

Do you think that a lot people would be interested in reading a book about a young breast cancer survivor

Do you think that a lot people would be interested in reading a book about a young breast cancer survivor?
I am a 28 year old survivor of a rare and aggressive form of breast cancer called "Triple Negative." I have been in remission from the disease now for 28 months and have been contemplating on writing a book about my experience dealing with this awful disease in order to give other young women with breast cancer hope. My question is, do you think that a lot of women, young and old would be interested in a book like this.
