Is there a connection between birth control pills and breast cancer

Is there a connection between birth control pills and breast cancer?
One gynecologist said there wasn't and prescribed them to me, but recently another one said I shouldn't take them because of the breast cancer risk. My mother had breast cancer and ovarian cancer. Can you refer me to any studies that have been done about whether birth control pills increase your chances of getting breast cancer?

no proven conection.

I heard so from Jason Evert but hes an unreliable source.. if you dont know who he is he talks about chastity and all that

There isn't any proven connection, however many doctors do get concerned when a woman is on the pill and has a strong family history of breast cancer. The medical community currently is not sure if there is any connection between the pill and breast cancer. Also, women who start there periods at age 11 or earlier have a higher chance of getting breast cancer, but this also is still being studied. Regardless of whether you stay on the pill or not, you'll want to be extra vigilant at doing self breast exams, having a well-woman exam EVERY year, and getting mammograms when you're at the right age. If you're looking specifically for studies on this, I suggest going to PubMed and entering in key words such as: breast cancer and birth control use.
4 :
i talked to my doctor about this last week and she said that there is no connection between birth control and breast cancer
5 :
Where this debate stems from is this: The more you are exposed to estrogen, the more risk you have for breast cancer. Some things that reduce estrogen production are: having kids (produces no periods) breastfeeding healthy weight after menopause starting your period later in life Most birth control pills contain a synthetic form of estrogen, unless you are taking a progesterone only pill. If you read the information packet that comes with your birth control, there will usually be a study about the link between birth control and breast cancer mentioned. Some studies have shown a slight increase in incidence, while others have shown no significant effect. For a list of the risk factors for breast cancer, what it looks like and how to calculate your own risk, look at the links below. Best of luck

What is it with women getting mastectomies just because there is a chance of breast cancer

What is it with women getting mastectomies just because there is a chance of breast cancer?
Just saw a story on the Today Show about a woman who had, based on new genetic testing methods, an 85% chance of getting breast cancer and so she had her healthy breasts removed. Sounds sadomasochistic to me to do something like that when you are just as likely to die in accidents or other diseases and the testing is new so who knows if she would have gotten the disease. There was a history of breast cancer in her family but a history dosen't mean you are going to have it, there is a history of everything in my family but the things I ended up suffering from nobody else had. Everyone is going to die anyway why chop up your body to try and avoid the eneventabtle? These stories make me sick! When I say these stories make me sick I mean that in the sense that I think they are gross not that I'm angry.

Apparently you have never had to watch in horror as a loved one slowly succumbed to cancer.
2 :
Some women choose to take away that risk isntead of finding out one day that they will have to endure lengthy, painful treatment sto treat cancer. Hopefully someday I will be able to get the genetic testing done as I have now had 2 aunts who have had breast cancer. I woudl rather remove them before If I had a good chance of getting cancer.
3 :
I actually agree with you and I am a female! Imagine that.... I wouldn't have my breasts removed. I would just make sure I had routine check-ups and mammograms.
4 :
You know what makes me sick? People who post such cruel and illinformed judgements such as this moron! Are you really foolish enough to believe you have an 85% likelyhood of being killed in an accident or succumbing to another disease????? You sound like a true misongynist...you should be ashamed of yourself, but I bet you don't have enough character.
5 :
the ironic part of women removing their breast bc of a + genetic test is that there is still some breast tissue left after the procedure, so there is still risk...
6 :
If ten years ago someone had told me I had an 85% chance of getting breast cancer, and knowing what I know now, I wouldn't hesitate to have a bilateral mastectomy. I had breast cancer, stage 3, at the age of 32. I went through a mastectomy, chemo, and radiation, and then reconstruction. Prior to my diagnosis I had had several clinical breast exams and done monthly exams myself. It wasn't until I was pregnant that I noticed a lump in my breast. The mentality out there is that women my age do not get breast cancer and that is the tragedy. I do not have the history in my family so I have never seen anyone suffer from treatment. But I have suffered through treatment and I would never want anyone to go through what I went through. The fun bags aren't so fun when they are trying to kill you. It still remains that they cannot remove every part of the breast tissue and people with an 85% chance of developing breast cancer could never be certain that what is left over is cancer-free. In a heartbeat I would have a prophylactic mastectomy but only based on what I know now

Why is breast cancer the cause du jour for women when heart disease kills many, many more

Why is breast cancer the cause du jour for women when heart disease kills many, many more?
You know, the pink ribbons and such, Baseball players wearing pink for a day and looking ridiculous, etc. Shouldn't women be wearing different color ribbons and marching for a cure for heart disease, since it kills far, far more women than breast cancer does? It can't possibly be that heart disease is suffered by both women and men that heart disease doesn't get its due, can it?

How long would a person have to live without being treated for breast cancer

How long would a person have to live without being treated for breast cancer?
When I was about 14 I discover that I had lumps in my right and left breast, but never cross my mind that it could be breast cancer. It has been 4 years since then, and I haven't been to the Doctor yet. I was wondering if it was breast cancer how long would a person have to live without being treated for breast cancer?

i hope you get better but i have no clue to the answer of your question sorry.
2 :
How many do you have? Do they soften up and harden up at different times of the month? I have a problem called fibrocystic breasts, where my breasts knot up.. especially during my teenage yrs. I would get knots about an inch or bigger. They hurt to be pressed on. I got a mammogram and they weren't serious. They told me young girls sometimes get knots in their breasts, and as they get older they get softer and don't knot up as much. They got especially hard and tender right before my period. Maybe this is what you have. I'd still suggest you go to the doctor and get an untrasound done on them, as well as a mammogram just to be sure.
3 :
You need to go to the doctor and get it checked out if is way worth it to make a trip to the doctor and be treated.
4 :
If you are still alive it wasn't breast cancer. It isn't that unusual for women to develop breast lumps and most of them are nothing. You should talk to a doctor about this, a mammogram may be in order here to rule out the possibility of cancer.
5 :
dont worry you don't have it. If you had you would probably be dead by now. You are too young. My wife found a lump in her breast Dec 07. June 08 it was the size of a fifty cent piece and it had travelled to her lymph nodes. If she had done nothing it would have entered her blood stream and gone to other parts of her body and she probably would be close to dead by now. Instead it became clear it was breast cancer, she had her breast removed by surgery, had 27 weeks of painful chemotherapy and is now undergoing radiation. This drastic action was necessary to save her life. If we had waited for four years I would be bringing flowers to her grave site now.

Breast cancer is uncommon in women under 40, rare in women under 30 and almost unheard of in women under 20. It is rare for breast cancer to develop in both breasts at the same time Most girls going through puberty develop lumps in the breast region, this is normal breast tissue. The chances of what you are describing being breast cancer are minuscule. However, you sound remarkably ill informed on the subject and should get your breasts checked by your Dr and at the same time get information on how to examine your breasts correctly and what to look out for.
7 :
it is not a cancer coz if it is a cancer you shold be dead by now,it maybe a benign growth or many other stuff ,all u need to do to make sure is doing a breast scan you can read more about breast cancer in here with many useful links http://breastcancerdestroyer.blogspot.com/

How to attach the pink breast cancer ribbon to a football jersey without pinning it?

hot glue
2 :
I would just tack it with a small sewn stitch that can easily be cut off after the game. It shouldn't cause any damage to the jerseys. Good luck.
3 :
I would suggest if you sew it to their jersey so that it will not be removed easily. Hope this helps!

What is the youngest age you can get breast cancer at

What is the youngest age you can get breast cancer at?
I was wondering this, because one of my friends thinks she has breast cancer, and I thought that thirteen was a very young age at which to develop breast cancer. I should have said this. She has a lump in her breast and she went to the doctor and they said its "abnormal." She thinks she has cancer, but she doesn't know for sure yet. She's getting a sonogram done.

You didn't mention why your friend thinks that she has breast cancer, but at age 13 it is EXTREMELY unlikely. About 2 out of 3 women with invasive breast cancer are older than age 55.
2 :
13 is very young to have breast cancer.....it does attack women as young as their 20's......if there is a familly history, especially if her grandmother and mother both had it, then she will probably want to be very watchful in the future...there is actually a test now, I believe, that can show if you have the genetic trait or something like that.....tell your friend to have her mother take her to her doctor and check it out.... Best wishes!

Breast tissue is present in male and females of all ages and thus breast cancer is possible at any age with any sex. However, breast cancer . . primary or secondary in children and young teens is rare. Breast cancer in children is also not the same as an adults breast cancer. There are many different types of cancer and there are several types of breast cancer possible in children. The most common types of breast cancer in children are Juvenile Secretory Carcinoma, Cystosarcoma Phylloides, and Lymphoma. As for your 13 year old friend what she is most likely feeling is breast growth caused by puberty. There are often small lumps or 'breast buds' that young teens will feel. However, since no one here can really tell what is happening with your friend it is important that she see a doctor to determine exactly what is going on. Here is some information about normal 'breast buds' found in young teens: Why are my breasts sore? http://www.kidshealth.org/teen/sexual_health/girls/sore_breasts.html

Why can't you have a pink Hawaiian party? Make pink tropical drinks like strawberry daiquiris (you can leave out the alcohol), get pink leis, decorate a fake palm tree with pink ribbons, etc

What does a lump in breast mean besides cancer

What does a lump in breast mean besides cancer?
I am almost 16 years old and just recently noticed a somewhat large, hard, and lumpy feeling mass in my right breast. I am extrememly embarassed about the stituation and don't know if I am just being paranoid. Is it possible for me a to have breast cancer?

I hope it's not. You can get effects like lumps during your menstrual cycle. Is the a school nurse you could go see quick.
2 :
Courtney - At 16 years of age, your chance of having breast cancer is almost zero. More likely your breast tissue, closest to the nipple is normally developing into adult features. What puzzles some young ladies is that one breast may start enlarging before the other so that at first one lump only is felt. There are several possible, but less likely causes of benign lumps in the breast, including a benign fibroadenoma nodule, a benign cyst, and even a deep skin benign tumor, including a lymph node. My best guess = developing normal breast tissue. Have your doctor check it out on your next visit.
3 :
At your age your chances of being struck by lightning are far greater than your chances of developing breast cancer. Breast cancer in someone under 20 is almost unheard of, and fewer than 0.1% of all those dignosed are under 30, with only 5% being under 40. Most (80%) are over 50. Breasts are pretty lumpy, bumpy things anyway; most breast lumps, even in women over 50, aren't cancer. At least 80% of breast lumps considered serious enough for biopssy are found to be benign. At your age, with your breasts still growing and developing, any changes you notice in your breasts are almost certainly normal hormonal development. It is NOT recommended that girls your age do breast self-examination; they will worry you unnecessarily and tell you nothing. The American Cancer Society and other cancer organisations recommend that women begin breast self examination at no younger than 20 - if then; some cancer professionals say 30. Before that it's pointless; firstly because there are so many hormonal changes that there is no 'normal' - and self examination is about a woman knowing what's normal for her and reporting any changes. And secondly because the chance of breast cancer is almost nil. Talk to your mum about this; she may well be able to reassure you. If you don't feel comfortable doing that, talk to your school nurse. She will be used to girls having concerns like this and will take you seriously and be able to reassure you that you don't have breast cancer.
4 :
Probably not. I had some of the same issues. Go to the doctor and they'll do an ultrasound. Odds are it's just a cyst
