How can you tell if you have breast cancer

How can you tell if you have breast cancer?
I was wondering what breast cancer would look like, or how to find it. I found a lump under my nipple the other day, about the size of a quarter. it hurts if i squeeze it. I'm not sure if it's breast cancer or not. I'm also a guy, 15.

Breast cancers in their early stages are usually painless. Often the first symptom is the discovery of a hard lump. Fifty percent of such masses are found in the upper outer quarter of the breast. The lump may make the affected breast appear elevated or asymmetric. The nipple may be retracted or scaly. Sometimes the skin of the breast is dimpled like the skin of an orange. In some cases there is a bloody or clear discharge from the nipple. Many cancers, however, produce no symptoms and cannot be felt on examination. They can be detected only with a mammogram.
13 :
well go to a doctor but i dont think guys get breast cancer

What will you do to promote World Breast Cancer Awareness Day

What will you do to promote World Breast Cancer Awareness Day?
My wife Marjory has just finished a horrible two years of treatment for breast cancer. She's blogged the story on http://www.twinkletwinkles.com so that others can benefit from her experience. Tomorrow is World Breast Cancer Awareness Day - what will you do to promote it?

i wear a pink ribbon everyday. You know how you always have that 2nd Mom?? Well my 2nd mom just got diagnosed!!! I'm going crazy trying to help out and put the word out there.

I'm not doing anything about it more than usual. I think most women are already aware that breast cancer exists. It's not something I want to dwell on, or to be afraid of because I think that fearing something like that can actually help in bringing it into a person's life. When I see information on how to prevent it -- not using deodorant that contains aluminum, for instance, considering how many women have breast tumors that are precisely in that outer area there near the where the aluminum concentrates from the deodorant under the arms -- and other information, I read it and I pass it on. I'm very sorry for your wife's struggles with it, and happy for her that she is finished with her treatment - I hope it was successful and that she lives to be 120! And I pray I never get it, myself. Or anyone I know.

Is it true that wearing a wired bra could give you breast cancer?
I was just now reading an answer - and it said that if you wear a wired bra while sleeping, it could give you breast cancer? If it's true, then how? I am usually wearing bra's while I am sleeping, just because it is too cold to take it off! hehehe. Please help.

No it's nonsense. Most of these rumours originate from hoax emails. Breast cancer, like other cancers, happens when normal cells change so that they behave in an uncontrolled way; your underwear cannot trigger this process or have any effect on it - and that applies no matter how tight the bra, or how long it's worn for, or whether it's wired or not, whether you're sleep or awake, or any of the other silly myths that teenage girls frighten each other with. Here's what the American Cancer Society says; scroll down to 'Uncertain or unproven risk factors', where it 'there is no evidence to support the idea that bras cause breast cancer', rightly ascribes this nonsense to 'internet email rumours'. http://www.cancer.org/Cancer/BreastCancer/OverviewGuide/breast-cancer-overview-what-causes

NO IT IS NOT TRUE> NOT PROVED SCIENTIFICALLY.

Describe the pysiology of breast cancer and what factors can affect its development

Describe the pysiology of breast cancer and what factors can affect its development?
Basically my nan has breast cancer and I haven't got a clue. All i really wanna know is what the causes could be or are, how its stops the body from working normally and what makes it worse? Please help :(

Sorry to hear your nan has breast cancer. Nobody know what causes breast cancer; there are risk factors, some avoidable and some not, but they ARE just risk factors and ticking one or all boxes doesn't mean someone will necessarily get breast cancer. Apart from being female and getting older (80% of people diagnosed are over 50), which are the two greatest risks, the possible risk factors are: Genetic; but only 5-10% of breast cancer cases are due to hereditary factors. Having children at an older age or not at all. The more children a woman has may also slightly lower her risk. Breast-feeding helps protect against the disease. The longer a woman breast feeds her children, the more she lowers her risk. Starting periods at a younger than average age (under 12) or having a late menopause (after 55) Taking the contraceptive pill or hormone replacement therapy (HRT) causes a small increase in risk. However, the risk gradually returns to normal after you stop taking them. Being overweight (especially after the menopause). Regularly drinking more than 1 unit of alcohol per day slightly increases the risk of breast cancer. Having a previous diagnosis of breast cancer increases the risk of developing a new cancer in the other breast. As for what makes it worse, the only thing I can think of is not getting it treated asap My best wishes to your nan for her treatment

Do i have a great risk of getting breast cancer?
My aunt was diagnosed with breast cancer when she was in her early teens? The last april my grandmother was diagnosed as well. She has has surgery and chemo treatments. Then last june my mother was diagnosed with breast cancer. They are all on my mothers side of the family. My three aunt's on my fathers side has had breast cancer but they are not of very close relation. Am I at a high risk for breast cancer? And what steps should I take?

yeah, be sure to get mamographs... check urself for bumps if u find something unusual go to the doctor and let them scan u
2 :
Everything else being equal, you are at a higher risk than someone with no family history of breast cancer, but you are not a high risk. You should start getting mammograms when you are 10 years younger than your mother age at diagnosis. It is almost unheard of to get breast cancer in your early teens, so I’m not sure what is going on there. This is a medical journal type case. How is it that aunts on your dad’s side are not as close a relation as an aunt on your mother’s side?
3 :
Yeah you do have a great risk! I am like you but worse, my grandmother had it but survived, my mother got it but she died 2 years ago :( We have to go and get check ups regularly. I had a scare when i was 19, i had a hard large lump in my breast and i got a biopsy but it was ok, it was benign. Good-luck, keep up your check ups!
4 :
Yes. In find from what you have stated that Cancer has run into your family from Maternal and Paternal sides. A family history of breast cancer. If you have a mother, sister or daughter with breast cancer, you have a greater chance of being diagnosed with breast cancer. Still, the majority of people diagnosed with breast cancer have no family history of the disease. So it is very essential you should be careful and have periodical checkups to ensure that you are free from Breast cancer or even if detected in early stages it will be easier to treat it sucessfully. You can have BRCA gene tests. Inherited genes that increase cancer risk. Certain gene mutations that increase the risk of breast cancer can be passed from parents to children. The most common gene mutations are referred to as BRCA1 and BRCA2. These genes can greatly increase your risk of breast cancer and other cancers, but they don't make cancer inevitable. The BRCA gene test is a blood test that uses DNA analysis to identify changes (mutations) in either one of two breast cancer susceptibility genes — known as BRCA1 or BRCA2. Genetic counseling also is part of the BRCA gene test process. After having a BRCA gene test performed, you learn whether you carry an inherited BRCA gene mutation and receive an estimate of your personal risk of breast cancer and ovarian cancer. Alternately a mammogram, once in a year need to be done. A mammogram is an X-ray of the breast. Mammograms are commonly used to screen for breast cancer. If an abnormality is detected on a screening mammogram, your doctor may recommend a diagnostic mammogram to further evaluate that abnormality. However I request you not to worry much and be careful and get the tests done to detect the deisease when occures. Best of luck -
5 :
95% of women have a 1 in 8 risk. 4% have a 1 in 4 risk. 1% have a 1 in 2 risk. Given your family history, there is a high chance you have a genetic predisposition, putting you in the 4% having a 1 in 4 risk. Be vigilant. Discuss a screening /monitoring plan with your Dr, and remember that still leaves you with a 3 in 4 chance of never having breast cancer.
6 :
You could be. The best thing you can do is to have regular checkups and mammograms. That way, if you ever have anything suspicious going on, it will be caught at an early time and you will not have to worry about anything. So please just have regular checkups nd talk to yur doctor about your family that has had cancer.
7 :
I think you do. I've seen answers in this section which claim cancer is not heriditary unless you have BRAC (whatever it is gene). But I agree with the people who say it is. My father's sister had breast cancer and my mother's sister had breast cancer. I have breast cancer. I don't know how old you are, but I would start getting mammograms as soon as possible. Talk to your doctor about your concerns.

What is the best way to prevent breast cancer

What is the best way to prevent breast cancer?
(1 in 8 US women will have breast cancer; 1 in 24 Philippine women. Is it what they do eat - or what they don't eat ... or .... ?)
Women's Health - 4 Answers

1 :
Prevention of breast cancer in high-risk women is probably more important than treatment of breast cancer. Many women who may have inherited genetic mutations in breast cancer related genes (called BRCA1 and BRCA2) might have very high risk of developing breast cancer. In these women and other women who have very strong family history of breast cancer, the chance of developing breast cancer may be decreased by hormonal treatment [citation needed]. Classic drug for breast cancer prevention is tamoxifen, which is currently used extensively in high risk women. A recent clinical trial has shown that Raloxifene, which is drug commonly used for prevention of osteoporosis is as good as tamoxifen in breast cancer prevention with much less side effects .Raloxifene is not currently Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved for breast cancer prevention.
2 :
Eat your greens, don't smoke, avoid blows to your breasts.
3 :
One clue to decreasing the risk of breast cancer is using virgin coconut oil for food. The Philippine women who move to the USA or to urban centers in the Philippines show as high of rates of breast cancer as American women - ruling out a genetic factor. But it is not possible at present to say if there is something in industrialized foods that actually causes increased incidence of breast cancer. Raloxifene actually causes a relatively minor reduction in breast cancer incidence, and though it was touted to have less side effects than Tamoxifene, these were not statistically significant - making it a profit-oriented hype campaign from the pharmaceutical industry much more than a serious medical breakthrough supported by legitimate scientific research. The FDA approved it because it's true, that it is therapeutically effective - but the risk-benefit advantage is not at all obvious.
4 :
I JSUT SAW THIS ON ANOTHER QUESTION: No, swallowing doesn't increase your protein level. It does however reduce the risk of breast cancer! This is a fact: The Univ. of North Carolina conducted a study and concluded that women who swallowed 2-3 times a week reduced their chance of having breast cancer than women that don't swallow. So no, it doesn't do anything for protein, but it does reduce your chance of getting breast cancer. THEY ARE TALKING ABOUT SEMEN, CUM, SPERM

Can you develop Breast Cancer and Ovarian Cancer at the same time

Can you develop Breast Cancer and Ovarian Cancer at the same time?
My question is fairly simple. I just want to know if it would be at all possible for my grandmother to develop Breast Cancer and Ovarian Cancer at the same time?

1 :
yes you can, my grandma had breast cancer, ovarian cancer and uterian cancer all at the same time. The longer cancer goes undiagnosed the more of a chance to spread it has.
2 :
Yes it is possible, but very rarely happens. I think little78lucky is confused, as this topic has nothing to do with cancer spreading.
3 :
Yes. It is possible to have more than one type of cancer at the same time.

How do you deal with breast cancer

How do you deal with breast cancer?
My step mom has breast cancer and is having a hard time now that she had surgery and got both breast off

I understand her feelings exactly because my wife lost a breast to cancer too. I have seen her with tears in her eyes as she runs her finger along her scar tissue. But she is more than her breast and my wife is considering reconstruction. What really matters is how much confidence she has in her team of doctors and how much further she has to go towards her final treatment. Once she gets the drains removed and she may or may not need radiation or chemotherapy. Confidence comes in the fact that people that have this done live sometimes with no evidence of cancer in her body for a long time. You or anyone fighting cancer deals with it in living one day at a time, one step in front of the other in doing what needs to be done to get life back to as much as normal as possible. What will be critical in her return to health is to exercise and stretch those areas the arms and shoulders. My wife is in the "ACTIVE" program where a physical therapist teacher her how to stretch and get her endurance up using a treadmill. A doctor than looks at her daily records and measurements are taken to see how much flexibility she has in movements of her arms and shoulders. That is one thing that will now be constant in your step mom's life. Exercising to maintain movement to stay flexible. Her doctor says that my wife has great motion because of her program. He said he had seen patients that have lost 75% of their ability of movement because they do not stretch. She will recover and gain confidence but it is a slow process. I told my wife that reconstruction is her individual decision. There is pain involved and right now she had been through enough. I would recommend web sites that actually have members that she could correspond with to talk about her cancer and double mastectomy. What has helped me is to read as much books about breast cancer and cancer in general to become informed and equipped to be able to address issues that may arise in our life's because of cancer. Knowledge is power and freedom, arm yourselves because the enemy is scary and thrives on fear. Slay the beast with the power of humor, friends, and using the weapons of exercise and nutrition. Peace to you and your step mom, she has a good partner in you and that value is priceless.

That's tough. I only lost one breast and it was quite a battle with trying to work and keep my health insurance and undergo two surgeries, 4 months of chemo and 3 months of radiation. But you take it one day at a time - literally. Don't worry about tomorrow. Get thru today. Exercise - yoga. Go swimming. I have not had reconstructive surgery and Macy's makes great padded bathing suits for breast cancer survivors. Make sure she puts make-up on and goes out to dinner or theater at least bi-weekly. Let her know you are there. I am 5 years out and doing well. Take care and good luck.
3 :
Tracey, in what ways is she having a hard time? Physically? Emotionally?
