Can anyone tell me what the leading causes of breast cancer are

Can anyone tell me what the leading causes of breast cancer are?
I hear about so many cases of it these days and it concerns me greatly. I would like to know what to try to avoid in terms of products, foods, etc if there has been any kind of a correlation made between that and breast cancer. We hear about it alot these days, and it makes me wonder why so many cases?

family history, high fat diet, small number of children or no children.

The truth is, while there are factors that seem to increase the risk, we don't really know what causes it. I was only 28, 2 kids (breastfed both past a year), no family history, not overweight, healthy diet and exercise when I was diagnosed with breast cancer. Breastcancer.org has a wonderful section with lots of helpful ideas called "Lowering Your Risk". It's on the left of the top bar on their home page. Hope that helps!

The known risk factors for breast cancer are: Getting older. Most cases (approximately 80%) of breast cancers occur in post-menopausal women (women aged over 50 years). Having children at at an older age or not at all. The more children a woman has may also slightly lower her risk. Breast-feeding helps protect against the disease. The longer a woman breast feeds her children, the more she lowers her risk. Starting periods at a younger than average age (under 12) or having a late menopause (after 55) . Taking the contraceptive pill or hormone replacement therapy (HRT) causes a small increase in risk. However, the risk gradually returns to normal after you stop taking them. Being overweight (especially after the menopause). Regularly drinking more than 1 unit of alcohol per day slightly increases the risk of breast cancer. Having a previous diagnosis of breast cancer increases the risk of developing a new cancer in the other breast. These are only risk factors though, and by no means everyone who ticks one, some or even all boxes will develop breast cancer. As Salli points out, many people who are diagnosed with breast cancer have none of these risk factors. I was somewhat overweight at diagnosis, but every other woman on my ward with breast cancer was very slender. There is no evidence that any product or food is linked to breast cancer, but some evidence that a low fat diet may help in prevention.

the most significant risk factors for breast cancer are, age, personal history of breast cancer, family history of cancer, genetics, high breast tissue density, breast hyperplasia, a long lifetime exposure to estrogen, not having children or having a first child after 30, radiation exposure and having Ashknazi Jewish heritage, being overweight, not exercising, drinking alcohol. These are statistics over many years of observation.
