What is with all this talk about breast cancer

What is with all this talk about breast cancer?
I know breast cancer is serious and should be reconized and women should get tested regularly but what about other diseases like alzheimers?? Breast cancer from what I hear is now almost 100% cureable but alzheimers isn't. We don't have nearly enough recogonision for alzheimers. So many people get alzheimers everyday and it's devestating. I know alzheimers can't kill you but it should still be noticed. I'm glad people are getting the word out about breast cancer and letting women know they need to be tested and do regular at home breast exams but it's all over the media. Why isn't other diseases and problems? Alzheimers needs funding as well as other diseases. My grandmother had alzheimers and it was so hard and I wish there would have been something out there to help her. It was devestating. Now my grandfather by marriage has it also. We need to find a cure for that. I'm not knocking breast cancer at all, I have so much respect for those who have it and those who fight it. I'm not posting nonsense. I know breast cancer kills millions of women everyday but other diseases do too and I don't see colors and signs and pins for those. Alzheimers might not kill people but it's just as devestating. I know there is funding for alzheimers but how many people actually know about it? Word needs to go out about more things as well as breast cancer. Thanks bmac for the links.

Excuse me, but breast cancer kills many women every minute of every day. Research your facts before you post such nonsense.

My deal with that is, what about the other cancers? Why arent there big deals about them too? just as many people die from the other cancers too.. Just bc Breast cancer is the most common to get, still there should be awareness for them all. Not just Breast. My family is dying from cancer, and all these people are only concerned with breast cancer, not lung, foot, brain, esophogus, whatever else there is.. just my opinon.

So what is your question? Of course there is funding and research for Alzheimer's. http://www.alz.org/ http://www.ahaf.org/alzdis/about/adabout.htm More organizations: http://www.ninds.nih.gov/disorders/alzheimersdisease/alzheimersdisease.htm

it's probably cause it's Breast Cancer Awarness Month. . .
5 :
well, i dont really know what exactly your asking but breast cancer is a seroius issue and if you think so strongly then you should make a complaint.

The reason why breast cancer is such a big topic in medicine because early detection can save your life. See, if you don't promote self-breast examinations, women might not be aware that a small lump in their breast might progress into a deadly tumor that will slowly eat their system up, then these cancer cells will slowly invade their liver, bones, lungs and brain. Breast lumps are usually benign, they don't spread and destroy other tissue, but imagine this - what about the percentage of population wherein breast cancer is hereditary. If your grandmother, aunt, mother or sister has breast cancer, your chances of developing breast cancer is increased by 2-3 times, or even more. We see patients in the hospital at the age of 25 having big lumps of breast cancer and it was so bad that they die in less than 6 months. Imagine, if they were detected earlier, while those cancer cells haven't invaded the other tissues yet, that woman probably would have still lived to see his grandchildren grow up. That's all the buzz about breast cancer. It's preventable, just like any other infectious diseases. But always remember, cancer is a traitor. Once you felt the symptoms, everything might be too late already for a cure. Hope this helps you somewhat. I'm a doctor, by the way.

it doesn't "kill millions of women everyday" as your additional details say.

I'm sure I'll get a lot of thumbs-downs for this one, but I've got to be honest. So, before you do, please read my answer objectively, and if you're still not convinced, follow the links I've provided. Breast cancer is extraordinarily profitable. It's profitable to shepherd women in for mammograms by the hundreds, it's profitable to sell "pink" products, and it's profitable for a company to claim that they're donationg "a portion" of their profits to breast cancer. Do they really care about women's health? Maybe. But consider that mammography harms ten women for every one it helps (exposure to radiation, false-positives, incorrectly calibrated machinery), and consider that a certain yogurt brand promoting their "Save Lids to Save Lives" breast cancer campaign uses aspartame, a KNOWN CARCINOGEN, to sweeten their product! Why is it so profitable? Because it's horrifying. It could happen to anyone. It puts in jeopardy the very things that most women associate with femininity (breasts and hair). Most women love to shop. Most women love to feel as if they're doing a part to make the world a better place. Most women would do anything to feel as if they're helping to ensure they don't have to die from the disease in the future. Thus, Breast Cancer Awareness Month and pink products. Sad, but true.

I understand your passion for your cause. There is not enough money or time for research for any of the diseases we face these days & too many people suffer due to poor health care in general which is a shame & a scam yet to be uncovered in this country. Just fyi though, there is no "cure" for cancer, breast or otherwise. YOu wouldn't be hearing so much talk about it if there were a cure as all would be just that, cured! Check your facts! In the meantime, if you feel so strongly about it, start your own organization for rasing money with this energy instead of venting opinions that aren't totally factual. Start your own Komen Foundation for Alzheimers!

I know that alzheimers is awful because my grandfather has it but you know what he is an old man and most people with alzheimers are older. You can't compare alzheimers and cancer. Breast cancer can and has been deadly and very young women are now getting diagnosed with this terrible disease so I think breast cancer is more critical. How can you not see that. Yes my grandfather has alzheimers but he has lived a full life and some women with breast cancer will die before they turn 45.

Well, I know a woman that had alzheimers, and it was horrible, at first she knew what was happening to her. It sucks..and I am sorry people have to go through that, and their families. I do not think one disease is better than another..they all deserve to be treated as getting a cure for that! I have had several family members die of heart problems adn different cancers. I am 34 yrs old, survived breast cancer 2x..I have had family members and few friends pass away from it. So I do not take it lightly, and they werent' cured. It is Breast Cancer Awareness month, os you are seeing it a lot. I am sorry that your loved one isn't doing well.. BUt if bc was 100% curable, my friends and family would still be here. and btw there are several kinds of breast cancer God Bless PS Brite Hope...prayers for you:)

I guess I am a little confused as to why you posted this on the cancer page. Usually people who look here either have cancer or know of someone close to them who have cancer. I don't think you understand how much you may have offended some people by not only what you wrote, but how you asked your question. I had a hard time deciding if I was going to respond to this, but I decided to, but I'm not sure why. I can understand how upsetting Alzheimers can be for family members, I don't disagree with that at all. But I don't think it is fair to compare cancer and Alzheimers, in fact, I don't think you can except for the fact that they are both diseases. Here's a little of my history. We had just moved a week before, we had an 18 month old daughter and I was 8 months pregnant with our second daughter when I was diagnosed with breast cancer at 29 years old. There's no family history that I know of, but that's not too uncommon. Since then, I have done the following: A mastectomy 3 months of chemo had a misdiagnosis of metastised cancer (changed doctors) 25 radiation treatments a second mastectomy Bi-lateralTRAM breast reconstruction (a 6 1/2 hour long surgery) I have finished 2 of 5 years of a daily pill I have to take I have finished 2 of 5 years of a study that I am in I did a years worth of an IV drug Herceptin And now I am in therapy and on an antidepressant to try and figure out how I can live day to day with the fear and knowledge that the cancer can come back and it can kill me. Then there's the whole guilt of passing this wonderful disease to my girls. I guess what I am trying to say is that I don't feel that this was an appropriate place to compare the two diseases as it is a very touchy subject. I applaud you efforts with helping Alzheimers, but please don't ask why breast cancer gets attention on a cancer posting site.

Instead of posting on here complaining maybe you should get out and make a difference in your cause. That is why breast cancer is so recognized. We are dying from it everyday and I really take offense to your question. Get out there and make a difference in your cause instead of bashing another cause.
